I practiced like mad getting into the clips. I had no excuse.

Congrats on the first race. I like the clips/straps. Trim the straps and install the toe strap "buttons" which basically form a wedge so you can tug on the straps to snug them up. In order to distribute the pressure of the straps more evenly so you don't numb your feet out too quickly use two of them. Three is overkill, doesn't help much unless you wear a size 50 or something.
Think about what happened (peak speed? not enough recovery?) and work on it.

I may get the strap buttons if I perserve with the clips and straps. I hate buying shoes because of my awkward feet and the money for new shoes could go to paying for more race entries to get shelled in.
As for what happened. It's easier to think of what I didn't do wrong. I just wasn't fast or fit enough. I hadn't done enough training, heck I hadn't even ridden that bike in a couple of months. I did a 77km race/fun ride on my road bike instead of the planned recumbent the day before. I possibly didn't warm up enough or have quite enough food/gel/water beforehand.
I did all the dumb things.
At least the first lap was neutralised behind a car so I didn't get dropped at the start due to not having clipless shoes and pedals.
It was fun though.

not really suffering, but was at my father's office this morning and took a crappy iphone pic of a (just after the) finish line photo on his wall.
i'm in the middle with the scott drop bars.
almost nipped him at the line, even with a bike throw, but had to settle for 2nd.
i think pcaddy knows the dude who won.

San Bruno Hill Climb - Jan 1 2011. If only my race time matched my suffering.

^^ early bird 5's? Dayum that's some short time between riding and posting? Looks like the pavement on the run up to the first corner is really getting broken up.

Yup, Early Bird 5s. Pavement was a mess there. I felt my rear wheel slipping once. Also sucks to get hit in the face with sand by the tire in front of you.
Wanted to hang around afterwards and take photos but my wife had frozen feet.
Was a lot of fun. First crit for me.

Megatron Crit today. 42 degrees, drizzling. My coach had me treat this as a practice race and wanted me to attack, attack, and then attack again. So I did. Nothing stuck though and by the time the sprint came around I was kinda cooked and screwed it up. 7th. A few pics pf my random, illogical, attacks.

Hoping I can do something like this at the first non-training race of the season

It's actually not my first race. I'm the equivalent of a newly minted & very slow cat 4. It was just the first race where I had someone to photograph me as I tailed by.
