Rotating brake pads

I wanted to ask this in the Road forum but didn't feel like filtering out the crap responses. I use my front brake more than my rear, and a significant difference in pad thickness has developed (naturally). Any harm in putting the thicker, less used pads on the front and rotating the front pads to the rear?

brianappleby 04-11-07 11:18 AM

why not just replace the front ones and leave the back ones alone? this way the front (important) brakes get a new set of pads, and the rears can just wear at whatever rate they want to.

don't have the $$. Seriously.

Well thats your answer right there. :) Shouldn't be too much of a problem as long front ones are not too worn out.

Really? You realize by simply replacing a set of pads when they're no longer useful you're not tossing money away at all. To me rotating brake pads is about as smart as rotating tires on a bike (i.e. not at all). OTOH if you're losing braking power in the front and can't / won't get a new set of pads, do it now! No sense risking things.

Yeah its fine, just make sure you dont put left pads on the right side of the caliper.

In the long run, you're not going to save money by rotating them. They will eventually both wear out...if you don't rotate the front will wear out quicker than the back, but if you do rotate they will wear out at the same time. So over the course of a long time, you'll replace them the same number of times. But if you mean you just don't have the cash at the moment, then you could save some money short term by rotating.

^^ because of taxes, I just don't have the cash right now.

Unless he has 36 dependents and makes $1000 a year, he'd better find an additional source of funds. :D

socalrider 04-11-07 01:42 PM

what kind of pads do you use?

ok, you just got married. YOU give him some advice then...oh I guess you just did.

From a woman's perspective, make sure you buy her a diamond that is as big as what her friends have.

When I went shopping for engagement rings with my wife, we went to the first jeweler and she tried on a 2.2 carat solitaire.

Her response? "Oh my God, that's way too big. I want something a lot smaller than that."

It was the happiest day of my life. :D

So... your parents gave you a buttload of money to invest?

Otherwise, how does one get so many income investments at such a young age? Really, tell me? :)

bdcheung 04-11-07 05:26 PM

Win bike races. Duh.

Did I say that?

Oops... sorry, I meant:

Someone who talks about getting earnings from their investments can't afford a $10 brake pad. Hell I'm pretty much dirt poor compared to most people here and I could afford $50 for a pair of swissstops cause I go through a set of pads what, once a year?

If you're that desperate, i have some pads lying around I can send you. You can also open up the calipers a little and put mtb style v-pads on it. I did that with a giant ocr2, the mtb pad ended up being almost 50% larger and had HUGE stopping power.

Enthalpic 04-11-07 06:08 PM

It was a question not a statement.

Still your situation makes no sense. You have sufficient money invested such that the returns are so substantial that you have to pay taxes -while attending university- and you can’t afford a brake pad?

If your lemonade stand made a killing, just tell us… how.
