I'm off the bike for 3 weeks, what to do?

So i'm getting married a week from this saturday, and then going to spain for 2 weeks. The new wife doesn't ride, so neither do I on the honeymoon.

The good news is that this falls during a lull in the racing season. the bad news is that i'm not training for THREE EFFIN WEEKS! I will bring running shoes, but i don't want to hurt myself running. THe most running i've done lately is 30-min at a time at low-medium intensity.

What can i do before/during/after my break to minimize the negative effects? I think about how much it hurts to climb stairs the day after a big ride, and I think that means I should climb stairs during the vacation. Anything else?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

B.

i'll go ahead and say it now, please no life advice. I'm not letting her ruin the honeymoon for me... i'm stopping my obsession from ruining it for her...

Staying in a hotel? They should have weights and exercise bikes; you could do a short high intensity workout everyday without ruining anything. Would she ride the elliptical detrainer for 45min?

Otherwise stairs and a couple miles of running if you’re new to that.

Well, since you won the Copperopolis road race, I suggest you sit around, get out of shape and give the rest of us a chance.
That is all, thanks.

I'll echo the above advice.

Short, high intensity work. If you do it right, you shouldn't lose any significant fitness.

I will be in Japan for 3 weeks. Same problem minus the female companionship. Use the exerbike at the gym. Congrats by the way. Now that you will be married, you can use that as an excuse as to why you didn't train hard enough to beat me.

By the way, Spain has some GREAT riding...you can't rent a bike and sneak out at 5AM???

I know, I know....

the problem is that in order to get a good ride, i'd need to bring bike shoes & pedals, lycra gear etc. We're trying to pack light, hopefully carry-on only

Although I suppose a ride or 2 in running shorts and shoes wouldn't kill me.....

Suicide is no longer an option since you'd leave a widow.

Dude. Spain.

I'm pretty sure "Spain" means "If you don't ride your bike here, don't bother coming" in Spanish.

But alas, I took Italian in college.

This is one of those defining moments of where you'll find out if riding will begin to interfere with your life. And by "your life", I mean, her life .

Next thing you know....a vacation will pop up later on down the road...."you're not expecting to bring your bike, are you?".

Yeeeeep. Baby steps.

That's close Cypress, the literal translation is:

'If you come here without your bike you leave your manhood @ the door'

But that's just another part of marriage anyway. I've been married 15 years, I learned this long ago.

Surely your honeymoon is a perfect opportunity to put in some long sessions

i feel your pain--i'm in the shape of my life, but need to split for two weeks for what's likely to be my last tour (i'm a recovering musician). not only will i be off my bike, but i'll be spending 8 hours a day in dirty pubs eating wierd english sandwhiches. and i tell ya, there ain't no gyms at the Travelodge. i'll be the hungover yank awkwardly learning how to run on unknown foreign roads...

Why can't you ride? Do what we do on vacation when I want to workout or ride:

She sleeps in while I get up early to go riding/workout. I'm back by 10am or so to have brunch with her. As long as you're back by then I can't see how your wife wouldn't agree to this.

And you're gonna be in Spain! You have to ride a bike there.

My wife and I rented mountain bikes in Spain (not on honeymoon though) and had a nice easy ride together. Well, nice when it was downhill. She was pretty miserable when it turned up for an hour to get back to the hotel.

You said your honeymoon is 2 weeks long. Why 3 weeks off the bike? You should be able to get a little riding in leading up to your wedding. In fact, you'll need it to work off some stress and get the f away from relatives for a while.

A couple weeks off isn't going to hurt you much. Just get a little exercise in where you can, don't gain 10 lbs., and use it to peak again in 6 weeks or so.

I honeymooned in Spain once. It is a great place with our without a bike. Enjoy.

Check to see if your hotel at least has an exercise bike.

I did the same thing last year on my honeymoon to Mexico. However, after verifying that there was an exercise bike on site, I never did use it...

Exercise bikes, running intervals, and hill sprints. Do a couple 1/2 mile runs 2 or 3 days apart before you leave. I did my first tri last year with only 3 miles of running training and got 3rd place (age) in the run, with no injuries.

Your training time will be short enough as not to annoy her, and it won't destroy your energy level for the rest of the day. Yet, you can challenge yourself and get your endorphine fix.

Yep, w/ a properly executed honeymoon there's certainly no reason for you to worry about losing any aerobic conditioning.
