Tom Danielson is SUCH A WUSS

Over the years I've been continually amazed by what a wuss Tom Danielson is. His "I'm still learning to ride in the peleton" thing went on for years, because he was too scared to actually fight for a positino in the bunch. Kissing Armstrong's toes is all well and good, but article after article about his "learning curve" made it clear he was either dumb as a rock or just a big wuss.

So it was a riot yesterday to read Levi and Tom's comments about the stage to Brasstown Bald. Levi cited Tom's "graciousness" in letting him win on Brasstown Bald. Tom's mushmouthed comments were more along the line of "Levi took off and I was worried about watching after Jani..."

WUUUSSSSSSS. Crying because your teammate kicked your butt. Too much. If you get immasculated by Levi Leipheimer you're not even a little girl, you're a unich. If one person lists Tommy D as the next hope of US cycling, anyone who cares about US cycling should slit their wrists.

Welcome to BikeForums, slickdemo! I appreciate your comments and opinion but wholeheartedly disagree. However, I am not an unreasonable man and will gladly concede that Thomas Danielson is, as you posit, a "wuss" if you would be so kind as to elucidate the basis of your sentiments.

I wouldn't call him a wuss..the guy can suffer..however I do believe Tommy D to be waaaaaay over hyped. He has to prove it this year or I believe he'll never prove it. I don't think he'll ever be a GT winner, in every GT he's been in he's had some sort of aliment, weather it be an injury or an illness. Part of being a GT contender is being able to stay healthy, something Tommy D seems to have trouble with.

He seems well suited to the shorter stage races and there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has a specialty. Didn't he do well in one of the recent Vueltas? Like a top 10 or something?

Part of the hype comes from the American media I think. I really feel sorry for a lot of these athletes who have so much pressure put on them to be the next big thing. We've seen it in cycling, ice-skating, major league sports, etc. I'd hate to be in that position. Just let me go out and do my job without the pressure.

I think the sad thing about Danielson is not how the media or the fans perceive him, but how he perceives himself. You can be cocky, like Armstrong; or, you can be an arrogant poseur. Armstrong knew how to talk and walk; but Danielson hasn't quite learned the walk part yet. He'd be much better off to accept his ability, and, therefore, accept the proper role in the team of supporter. The only place this guy should be leading a team is on a domestic squad, like Health Net or Navigators. Even then ...

I would have just called slickdemo an idiot for posting that, but BD puts it so much more diplomatically.

It takes a special kind of courage to create a username for the sole purpose of bashing someone as a wuss anonymously on the internet.

Ehh, he seems a little overhyped but not ridiculously so (*cough* Hincapie 2006 TdF *cough*). He did place #6 in the Vuelta a Espana last year, which is not that shabby.

Besides, even if he isn't la creme de la creme, I always get a little hesitant to call any rider of that caliber a "wuss."

I think that hype came from Disco as much as anywhere else. He was touted as the next big American GT winner. I agree that he's better suited for shorter stage races than the GT's but every year he's touted as co-leader for the Giro and inevitably he's ill or injured for the first part of the race, or he has to ride himself into form. I'm sorry but Stalionforce is right he's better off being a domestique or on a domestic squad.

By the way the Nyack ride will go off as usual, but there may be a couple of minor detours. There were rumblings in the choir about some crazy alternative route but the Pope of Nyack has spoken. Ye Olde Nyacke Ride will not be blashemed by any bike weenie hand-wringing over minor course changes, a sacrilige that is hard for me to even contemplate, let alone post here. I will be departing from Planet Piermont @ 8:15 or so. The Pcad Xpress leaves Chester @ about 7:15AM.

With any luck all the Big Guns will be riding in USCF and college races and the Spring Classics where they belong to spare aging bike weenie legs. Zipp, schmipp, it's all about the motor. The motor was running good today, but today was 80 miles of fun and vertical gain, which could leave me toast for tomorrow. Oh well. I'll get my ride in whether it's on the Big Wheels or in the Bring up the rear Fred Parade.

Hope to see you there. And if you do show up, if you see me taking a pull longer than 3 Mississipi please kick me. Wheel sucking in pursuit of not getting ejected is no vice.

Fear not, almighty patentcad, for while the penguin will be present at the Nyack ride, he rode 6:15 today and did 5 climbs of at least 1000ft, 2 of which are certainly amongst the nastiest roads to have ever been paved in the universe.

Then I may see you tomorrow, but we will only be able to share conversation if the oxygen masks haven't dropped. Let's hope some deranged lunatic doesn't decide to go 28mph on Piermont Road so we can shoot the BF Bull. My Zipps are ready. I'm not sure I am however.

Since when has not being able to do something as well as someone been reason to not criticize? On that criteria you've nearly eliminated all sports journalism (but that's a digression).
Danielson has not exactly lived up the hype that has surrounded him. Is it him being a 'wuss?' Probably not, though his head certainly seems to be lacking a bit. Yes he's placed top 10 in a major tour, huzzah...until he's actually competing for a real podium spot, he'll still be lacking.

And how much race experience do you have?...I think there is probably a reason Danielson is the in the pro peloton and you aren't, but could be wrong...
