here is my computer data

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/i...kValue=2523823

ended up 12th in the E4's - no complaints here considering im far from what you would consider a climber...legs popped half way up to the finish and I counted 4 spots lost

I've had a tough few weeks at work, my parents came to visit for 5 days centered around last weekend, and I didn't even do my bike commute last week; so I wasn't prepared at all to race yesterday. However, I had already pre-registered, at least had a teammate (and eventual winner), it was less than an hour's drive, and with only 15 pre-registered racer's in the Master 55+ 4/5 and a prize list that went 6 deep, I figured "What the heck?" , dragged my @ss out of bed, and drove over to Livermore.

We started out real slow with no one wanting to work. I led the group up Carroll the first time (not too hard, not too slow) and a few riders popped off the back. Second time around we were swarmed by the Pro/1/2 guys and getting passed both left and right. The Hammer Gel rider set a stiff pace and at the top there were only four left. I popped off between the I-580 overpass and the right turn on N. Flynn where the Pen Velo rider caught up to me. I told him that I wasn't going to help him chase down my teammate, so we kept going, but not real hard. Along the flat section after the start line, two others from our race caught up.

The wind picked up throughout the day but it was either a crosswind or tailwind on the ascent and headwind on the descent. This did have the benefit of keeping speed down on a tricky right-hand turn heading down Flynn where, in past races, it was easy to pick up speed and either cross the centerline or, worse yet, slam into the hay bales!

Again, I made it up to the finish area OK but I really wasn't feeling all that great and didn't chase after the two guys when they took off for the final lap. The 4th guy in our group dropped off on the climb and I was pretty sure that I could beat him on the last climb for the 6th and final place for a bottle of wine and T-shirt. I didn't want to take any chances though and soloed through the last lap; getting to within 15-20 seconds of the two in front of me but they eventually disappear down the road.

After I made the turn onto Carroll for the last time, I took a look down the road but didn't see anyone and knew that at least I got a prize and just rolled over the line.

Our club - Go Green Gumby Warriors - had a good day. I got to watch as our guys in the Master 45+ 1/2/3 come in 1 and 3 and 2nd in the Master 55+ 1/2/3. Hillmut had another good race in the 3's. Ted Huang got 5th in the Pro/1/2. Erin got 2nd in the Women 3's and Phyllis 3rd in the Women 45+.

My teammate who won gave me his bottle of wine for doing most of the work for the first couple of laps.

I think I liked this race better last year when they had us old geezers racing together with the 45+ 4/5's. It made the climbs more painful but you could hide out in the pack and let the 45's do all the work!

SteveE, congratulations and thanks for the report.

Here's my report from the 35+ 1/2/3

1st lap - easy & civil, not much going on, most everyone together.
On the second climb I moved to near the front and our pack broke in 2 and my 7 teammates were in the back half. A small breakaway of 5 riders went off the front as we turned on to Patterson Pass road. Since the 4 strongest teams each had a rider up there, I bridged up to it, but when I got there I could tell that it probably wouldn't last since the strongest riders were not there.

We stayed out front for the rest of that lap until the big climb when 4 more guys bridged up to us. 3 teams had 2 riders and I thought this might stick, but we were caught by a chase group of about 15 by the time we got to the flats. With 25 riders left the stronger teams were attacking, most noteably Safweway's 2 strongest riders. Me and a few others chased down all their attacks and we were together again for the 4th climb. The climb was pretty hard this time and by the top our 25 were down to about 10, but by the bottom we were back up to about 20 (man these guys are tough to get rid of!)

On the flats the attacking continued by the same 2 guys, but with some good efforts we were keeping them from getting away (they were doing their jobs perfectly tiring us chasers).

When our group of 20 made the final right turn with a 3/4 mile climb to the finish I liked my chances, but I had burned too many matches chasing down attacks and I couldn't pull away. As the climb flattened out before the finish I could feel all the sprinters behind me ready to pounce and that they did. A well protected Safeway rider took off and won easily as I struggled through the line in 6th. His teammates did an excellent job of both tiring the rest of us out and delivering him to the base of the final climb.

It's so dang tough to beat a team with so many strong riders (3 or 4 of whom could have won the race), but I'm having fun trying.

Oh well, I did at least get a T-shirt and a bottle of wine.

45+ 1/2/3:

I came, my legs went missing so I found some tree stumps to use instead, I still made all the selections, (did I mention my legs went missing?) but I couldn't find the power dial on stumps for the finishing hill (where's Dura when you need him?). Nice view of people riding past me. 16th. GWHBNAH took 31st. I guess I wasn't the only one not having a good day. Wasn't feeling optimistic about the crit the following day. See report.

i came in third in the E5. Second Loser. The race went reasonably well but our team had a total of 7 guys in this field and we should have been able to come up with a win. I ended up riding excatly how I would have if i were alone. We need to do team-building stuff. Im officially a 4 now, upgraded and all, next important race will be pescadero.

There is some discussion as to whether or not GWHBNAH was actually there. No one in our club seems to remember seeing him (even looking for white & orange shoes ) and there is speculation that someone else on his team might have used his race registration.

Entirely possible. I don't recall seeing him in the mix at all either, but saw his name on the score sheet. He was entered but didn't show on Sunday.
