First Race: Conquer the Canyons

I did my first race this weekend, Conquer the Canyons in Westlake, as "First Time Beginner". I finished 2nd in the TT, RR, and GC. Here is my race report.

Congratulations. I was there to watch the circuit race (I did the charity ride that ended in time to stick around for the races. If I recall, your group actually had a nice pack finish as well. The 1st timers group had a nice bunch, including one guy in baggy knee-length shorts and another on a hybrid bike! Will you be racing often now?

edit: Come to think of it, was the overall winner of your group that guy who was leading but still sprinted to take the 5 second bonus prime?

The guy in the baggy shorts was interesting; he wasn't paying attention or something and started with the intermediate field; they had to yell at him to stop! The guy on the hybrid was about half an hour down after the circuit and I don't think showed up for the road race today. I'm not sure if baggy shorts was there today either. It looks like there were 33 at the TT and circuit but only 21 finished the road race.

I think so, but it was kind of depressing to see my 2nd place in the TT would have been about mid-field with the cat 5 group. I thnk I would have done OK but probably burried in the pack somewhere. I guess that's why everyone gets the fancy bikes and race wheels, etc. cause otherwise it must be hard to break out.

Yes, Will Van der Reis was the GC leader going into the circuit (beat me in the TT by 0.03 seconds), won the intermediate sprint, and finished 3rd in the field sprint at the finish. Here is in in front in the white, and I'm behind him in the green. I think this was right after the first lap so it wasn't the intermediate sprint.

Very nice. Don't worry if you will be mid-pack in Cat5. That's actually a good starting point. The average beginner goes off the back on the first race. There are sandbaggers in Cat5, so there will always be overlap between them and the pace of the 4s and 3s.

Something like that. It was awesome, like Fred City, but I like that it encouraged people to try it out no matter what equipment they had. I saw people in that category racing with mirrors, hybrids, unflipped stems, Formaggio jerseys, and the promoters looked the other way in that group in order to encourage everybody to give it a try.

Well I had just lost an uphill tt by .03 seconds, I'm sure lighter equipment would have helped...

But hey, I made the comment when I was young and stupid

It was very disappointing that it was the only year that race was put on. Maybe another promoter will want to give it another try. It would be interesting to know why they didn't do it again, as it was quite popular.

And in case you didn't recognize him in the pic, umd is in the green & blue jersey just behind the leader.

On a related note, now I have to go dig thru some cassettes and hope I can find a player somewhere around here.

Atlanta's Grant Park Race Weekend had a crit last year for "First Time Racers", not sure if they do it every year, but it got me "hooked". Been training since November for the 2010 race season!

It's difficult to get permits and road closures in that area from what I hear.
