Basso released!!

The article was on paceline.com this morning. Apparently it was 100% Basso's decision.

Now what? is he going to be out of the Giro and TdF this year or is there a chance someone else would pick him up?

Sounds like he's a good candidate to ride for Tinkoff.

To me it says only one thing. If he asked to be released he knows his DNA will match. Discovery has supported him more than they probably should have...obviously now. No other team is going to pick him up...this year for sure...4 years from now...will this Puerto deal result in a lifetime ban?

you beat me to it. In hindsight, Disco looks kinda stupid for even having taken the flyer on Basso in the middle of this.

He's guilty and knows it so there was no reason to give up his DNA, expose Disco to a long and drawn out (and embarrassing) legal battle only to end up like Jan. I'm sad but not surprised by this news, Basso was my favorite GT rider, I guess he can plead guilty and take his two year suspension then ride for a Continental team.

Bad due diligence on Disco's part.

I hate that nearly every news article, forum post, conversation, etc. about pro cycling centers around doping.

CRAP!

There goes my Italian wonderboy wannabe figure.

Look, the only reason he does this is because he knows deep down that he's in trouble, right?

This sucks...where do I turn now?

I'm thinking Danilo Da Luca or whatever his name is!
Young Italian stud....just won LBL too....but that fugly Bianchi/"LEAKY GAS" kit....arrrggg....why Ivan, WHY?!

Nah. He was low risk to Disco.

There had to be about 20 different clauses under which Disco could bounce Basso at the first sign of trouble. They made it clear they would let him ride, but not if things started getting hairy with Puerto again.

The risk was having him associated with the Team when they are pitching themselves to new sponsors. Having management that knowingly associated themselves with Basso under the circumstances is not a positive in today's climate when you're trying to get a Corporation to tie their brand to yours.

Stage Races? (this is off the top of my head, I'm sure there are bunches omissions and mis-spelled names)

Damiano Cunego
Alejandro Valverde
Alberto Contador
Frank Schleck
Marcus Fotham

1-day/classics
Di Luca
Boonen is still a kid
Cancellera
Flecha
Ballan
that kid from T-Mob who looks prodigious
any of the above mentioned SR contenders

Pro cycling is blessed with gobs of exciting young talented riders to follow. It's a shame that so much focus is on the doping issue when there is so much great racing going on.

He was my favorite, but as soon as his lawyer said they would give any DNA only if it applied to cases after OP, I knew he was guilty.

As for the new 50+ riders implicated, this just shows exactly how common doping is in racing.
My guess is that the strongest opponents to DNA testing (i.e. Bettini) will be on the new list.

Has anyone else noticed that the spring classics are different? riders are now blowing up like the old days, Liege-Bastone-Liege saw many riders take off and get caught -they are actually getting tired! none of this 8 minutes nonsense.

Why? check out TDF 04,05...He wanted to beat a certain rider, and this was the only way.

The Giro is wide open now..Di Luca really doesn't have it for Tours.

I'm liking Cunego, the Schlecks, maybe Schumacher.

I think Caisse D'Epargne/Illes Balears is going to put on a show this year. I think that team is coming with a whole new attitude for the Grand Tours after the TdF... Whether it'll be Pereiro or Valverde I don't know, but Pereiro sure came out of nowhere in the Tour.

Ok lets keep in mind that Disco is sort of in the clear here because none of these violations will be when he was with Disco...in fact if I was Disco I would be contacting the media and make sure he is referenced as the ex CSC rider or that it is noted that he was riding for CSC at the time.

Basso asked to be released so that it would not affect the signing of a new sponsor...good for him.

In other news on this front did anyone catch the headline about Puerto Plus? They are saying that there is now a 6000 (yes with 3 zeros) page document and that there are AN ADDITIONAL 49 riders that will be named.

...added bonus: I believe they have one of the best looking kits on the tour too.
