First Race or Pedals?

I am in a unique situation. I have only been cycling for a few months, and I am in college (little money), so I am still riding with toe clip pedals. I did some extra work Saturday now I have money. While I was at the Tuesday night crit earlier a friend gave me a pair of shoes, so now all I need is pedals.
While at the same crit another friend was talking about going to the Walnut Grove Road Race in Spartanburg, SC. https://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1424075 If I go to the race I will be catting up to the 5s. I will have to borrow a few things such as a pump and repair kit.
I only have money for pedals or the race, so weigh in with your expert opinions.

Pedals. It's a tough decision but you're going to need pedals eventually.

Go for the pedals, then definitely use the next bit of cash you saved up to race.

Ask around to see if any of your buddies have a spare set of pedals they can loan you for the race - maybe they can pull them off a training bike or winter bike? If you can scrounge some up, then do the race. And keep your eyes open on local chat lists, craigs list, and ebay for some cheap pedals.

Most upgrades don't need nearly as many points. To cat up to 5, though, you need 60 "upgrade points"(read: dollars) to cat up.

I'm really not sure yet, but it should be pretty exciting to go from a non-racer to a 5. Like Dr. Pete said, all I need is 60 upgrade dollars.

I have decided to skip this race and get some pedals. Thanks for the opinions.
