How'd you do in your first race?

Raising the Abyss
40th out of 44 (Cat5 Cali State Championship). Dropped at about 6 miles into a 38 mile race, 1 minor mechanical (dropped chain).
Learned plenty though and had fun.

First race was a practice race. I got lapped.
First non-practice race was a 5-only crit. 5th place. I wish I could do that more often.

4th, I missed the decisive break of 3 but was first in the uphill finish in my group. It was a small field too. I think only about 12-15 guys. I should remember this kind of stuff because it was only a week ago

I did a RR where nobody new the finish was coming and the whole pack crossed together, I got 22nd
First real race the next weekend was a cat 5 circuit race, I got 4th/50. I thought I had it won, until my legs stopped working - that was a horrible feeling.

I got 10th out of 30 or so at Mt. Penn last year. That is a tough first race to do, it has a pretty nasty hill. I loved every minute though, even when I threw up a little in my mouth. Hooked ever since.

Geez, a lot of guys here doing really well on their first race!
As for me, I got dropped on the 4th lap of a 20 lap race. I was not last, however.

so are you ever forced to pull out of the race when racing a crit? or do people voluntarily pull themselves out because of tiredness/embarrassment?

Just not to the same person in the same race.
I've abandoned races, but never been pulled, even after being lapped.

My first race was last Wednesday--training race--10 laps. I foolishly tried to pull the pack around a few times, even up the one hill. Wound up dropping out the back. Worked my way back up. Tried to break away only to find the pack in my slipstream. Dropped out the back. Worked my way back up. Didn't have anything left for the bell lap. Dropped out the back. Came in somewhere nearly last--passed one soul on the way to the finish and sure another DNF'd from a crash.
My next race is tomorrow, Wednesday, and I'm going to practice being pack filler until the bell lap.

Making a kilometer blurry
My first cat 5 race was in the 4s (back in 1992, you could choose to race Citizens or 4s). It was the Meridian Classic. I thought they were going too slow, so I pulled the pack around a lot. Ended up finishing just behind the pack, as expected with that behavior

Utah TT Series, DFL, 1st was Jeff Louder, that was back when I used to race with the pros
Then a citizen crit, 2/8 in the mens, unfortunately they ran us with the Juniors who did laps around us like we were feeble old men, which we kinda were.
Then a Cat4 circuit, DFL but didn't get lapped until the final straightaway.
Then a DNF, etc etc etc...........
First Cat5 crit, 17/31

My first race, a crit, (cat 5) was April 1st of this year. We got to take a practice lap and I noticed at the first corner that there were bed matresses around 2 or 3 trees and on the other side was some yellow caution tape marking not to go this way. Well being the first race and all I was going to find somebodys wheel and settle in. The first corner came up and I didn't follow the wheel ahead of me so I rolled thru the yellow caution tape actually locked the brakes almost fell over. Unclipped. Backed up. Woosh goes the peloton and I'm in last place. Clipped back in and finished 4th out of 15 people. Almost had third but there was a nasty up hill climb for the finish and somebody was on my wheel and beat to the finish.
