Racer hurt in oregon

This is all the info I can find so far.. I am assuming this was at the silverton road race.

Categories: Breaking News

Six bicyclists participating in a race in Marion County crashed late Sunday morning and one bike rider was seriously injured.

Ryan Mcknab, 31, of Corvallis, was transported to the Silverton Hospital and then transferred to OHSU Hospital by Life Flight. Several other racers were also transported to the Siliverton Hospital for injuries.

Mcknab's condition was not known Sunday evening.

I dont understand the sugnifigance of your post.

The 'sugnifigance' is.... You don't have to read it, if you don't feel its worth your time.

Jakey...you can read more about it on the OBRA mailing list.
It's significant because it's a harsh reminder of just how dangerous this sport can be and serves as reminder that no matter how good of a racer you are, you're still vulnerable to some extent.
It happened right in front of me on a downhill finish at 30+ mph.
Rumor has it that it was caused by a flat.
It's never pleasant to see bike parts flying and hear the cracking of helmets on pavement.
That's why it's significant.

as far as i hear it was a front puncture followed by locked bars which then took out two more folks. ended up blocking the road.

it was a pretty significant crash. he's not out of danger yet so keep your fingers crossed.

yup- it was SRR. 400-500 meters from the finish- on the downhill section. kinda weird as the pack is usually strung out by that time. 30 Cat 4-5 riders screaming into a downhill finish. ugh. glad no one hit the telephone pole though.

fortunately there were medical staff on site and the hospital was not too far away.

Hey Jakey, I saw that too and saw that Fishmel was at the back of the group....I PM him to see if he is OK....I surely hope so.
It is really too bad, getting hurt for a 4/5 local race is not worth it.
Ciao

There's been a lot of carnage in Oregon this year. About every major race has had one bad crash. I guess all that discussion Mike Murray was having at the beginning of the year about racers carrying their own insurance was a harbinger.

I was in it, @ 5-8 place when the chaos happened. Got to take my first ride in an ambulance to Staton Hosp. Hoping the dizziness and pain will subside by Friday so that I can be doing Mt. Hood. Thanks for your thoughts Dabbo, I've been downing vicodine for a day and a half, and should be good to go.

Too bad, I am sorry. Hope you get it back for Hood and good luck there, I am sure your climbing legs will come handy too.
Ciao

It is a very hilly road race with about 1k of slight downhill at the finish (I think its only 1 or 2% grade, but I'm not sure). It has been run on this course for a long time without incident. This is one of the first times a race has finished on this course in a large bunch sprint, it is almost always spread out by the hills into small groups.

I've never liked the idea of downhill finishes, however slight the grade. I hope all have a full recovery and see y'all back in the peleton in no time.
