Catting up to 3, finally

Well, my sandbagging days are over, after this weekend I'm submitting my cat up request. Apparently the other teams were complaining and the team "director" said it was time.

It was a good weekend, I took the Sandy Spring Cycling Classic omnium with a win in the TT and the road race, and a breakaway 5th in the crit after blocking for a teammate in a 4 man break for half the race. I would have gotten 2nd in the TT in the Cat 3's behind a professional triathlete who won the TT, RR and criterium easily.

So I guess all those bad things we hear about triathletes don't always apply.

Nice work ... few understand just how much time and effort this takes. Outside of the world of racing, this little piece of news would elicit a yawn. Around here, your efforts are revered!! Congrats.

Nice job! You'll have more fun in the 3s anyway.

Congratulations on the upgrade!

I am looking forward to riding with you guys tomorrow. Looks like I need to bring a cue sheet for when I get dropped and have to find my way home.

Congrats branman. I think you'll find Cat 3 races to be more fun than Cat 4. Other than the fact that they are much harder to win.

What's your next goal - Cat 2 by this time next year?

my goal is to actually put enough time into training so that I'm competitive in the 3's races. I'm not sure I want to ever race the pro/1/2 races

I want to be able to average at least 10 hours per week, rather than less than 6/wk I'm doing now...

If you can win races in Cat 4 and consistently place in the top 5 or 6, you should be competitive in the Cat 3s. If you are doing that on 6 hours per week of training, you must have a bit of talent in your legs. Be sure to go into the 3s "racing" - don't start out just sitting in to see if you can hang. Do the same attacking/chasing or whatever you do to win the 4s and you will get results in the 3s.

Down in the south (Louisiana and Mississippi) we don't have enough participation, so when you upgrade to a 3, you have to race in a 1,2,3 race. I'm guessing that's why we have quite a few sandbaggers in the 4's. Personally, I have enough points to make an upgrade to the 3's, but because of the unique situation we have, I have 2 team-mates who will have enough points at the end of the season - and we'll upgrade all together next season. I think it will be more fun this way - with team-mates. Congrats on your upgrade.
