First Crit Report

Hi all,

Did my first ever crit this morning

The course was pretty straightforward: rectangular, about 1 mile, and totally flat. It was a club crit with about a dozen riders split into two groups. I got put in the faster of the two groups, which consisted of the aussie equivalent of Cat3 riders (me plus five others). The race was set to be forty minutes.

We set off at about 22 mph over the first couple of laps, with basically a rotating paceline going, and people pulling for about a lap at a time. After a couple of laps of this, the pace increased to about 25 mph, and held at this for most of the race, with a few people attacking up to 28-29 mph a couple times. I surprised myself by pretty comfortably spinning away at about 110-120 rpm and hanging with the group without too much bother (almost dropped of the back through a couple corners as people accelerated). I was feeling pretty good approaching the 40 minute mark, but then things went horribly wrong.

On the second-last lap the paceline broke up, with people vying for position going into the final lap sprint. Somehow, I ended up on the front as the paceline regrouped toward the end of the lap. Not a great place to be for a sprint, I thought. I decided to pull off the front and try and squeeze in second or third wheel back. No luck, and I was suddenly on the back

Heading into the last lap, everyone dropped the hammer, and the group hit about 30 mph. The sudden acceleration caught me by surprise, and I put in a hard effort to bridge the 20 feet onto the back of the group approaching the final corner into a 50 m sprint. Leaped out of the saddle and gave it everything I had, but the bridging had taken it out of my legs at the worst possible time . Managed about a 32 mph sprint across the line, passing one guy for a 5th place finish

Overall, I was stoked to have kept up throughout the majority of the race, considering I've only been riding a couple of months. I've chalked my mistake on the last couple laps up to experience and next time I'll make sure and get in a better position for the sprint. I think if I'd been second or third wheel I could have held it for a top three finish but oh well.

Overall, had great fun, especially taking 90 degree corners at 25+ mph and it was a great workout if nothing else
