Metallic taste in mouth when riding over 176 bpm or so

I noticed in my crit tonight my mouth started getting a very Metallic taste as my HR went over 176 or so, basically i have to be pushing really hard.....is this a normal occurence? Possibly lactic build-up? Anyone?

I don't know why this happens, but I'd probably ask where is 176 relative to your HR at OBLA (or MLSS) as well as your max HR?

after doing some reading, i don't think the 176 has anything to do with it...well kind of. At 176 I'm pushing pretty hard and breathing with my mouth open...the evaporation of the saliva in my mouth is increased and the minerals in the saliva are left on my tongue leaving this metallic taste....thank god for google!

Blood is definitely a possibility. Otherwise, I'm honestly not sure.

You're not riding one of these are you? if so, maybe lowering your saddle might alleviate your condition.

You're not sure?! But you are a doctor! I get the same thing after a TT, when I've gone full gas for a long period...zone 5c...I get the same taste in my mouth.

"If you aren't tasting metal or smelling like ammonia, you aren't going deep enough".

Made up quote, from an old-school dehydrated six day racer, circa 1921

Must be the guy up front. He's got a biker's emaciated upper body and look at the shirt - he's already dialed it up past 400W

Some of your lung's air sacs burst when breathing very hard. Apparently this is a problem with wind instrument players (trumpet etc) which is when I first learned about it. Usually happens when it's cooler as your air sacs aren't that flexible with lower blood flow.
