How many registered Cat1, Cat2, Cat3, etc racers are there in the US?
My inlaws are in town and asked me about my cycling. I was trying to explain the whole notion of racing Categories and got some blank stares. They finally said "so how many Cat3s are there in the US?" which I could not answer.
I think there are something on the order of 50000 USA Cycling registered racers. I thought someone posted some data as to the Cat-specific breakdowns but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone help with this?

Anyone ever get the question on how you become a "Cat" racer?

But seriously, 1300 Cat2s sounds about right but I'd like to know where the OP in that thread got his data.

Over at the USA cycling site https://www.usacycling.org/rankings/ you can see how many are ranked in each discipline. But it is a PITA to figure out total numbers as so many are tied. Cat 2 RR has 1100 rankings, but there are a lot of ties so the number is higher than that. Not sure you can find how many are registered from looking at the website.

Sort of depressing that the numbers are that low, it's only a combined total of 7953 guys. That's using the criterium rankings, which I think would be the most common event.

Rankings is way off...
Locally our results are rarely posted to the site.. so very few racers show up when I search my whole state (~15-20 per cat)

It's amazing this is such unfathomable information.

there's plenty pf licensed racers out there without any ranking (i.e. me - kind of tough to do when i'm not racing over there).

Those figures don't count the thousands of masters who only race in masters races.
Also, I know a lot of guys who only do road races and others who only do crits.
Here are the numbers on licenced cyclists in the Nor Cal/Nevada association.
USCF riders in the NCNCA region (as of June 8th, 2007)
Total USCF Members 3573 Cat Total under 35 35+ 45+ 55+
Cat 5 939 348 591 268 64
Cat 4 men 1032 303 729 297 63
Cat 4 women 285 131 154 68 13
Cat 3 men 659 172 487 191 49
Cat 3 women 124 56 68 31 7
Cat 2 men 328 104 224 89 20
Cat 2 women 74 32 42 14 0
Cat 1 men 100 38 62 14 0
Cat 1 women 32 15 17 3 0
Juniors total 202
Junior Men 175
Junior Women 27
Sorry, the chart doesn't line up well, but you get the idea.
