whoa. I just talked to one of my former team mates. Apparently there was a nasty crash in the Masters--one rider was in very bad shape

I had to road marshall at that spot for the next race and there were witnesses saying the fire rescue staff were doing CPR on him. The police also think it was a heart attack that caused the crash and were investigating it.

I understand that it did not end well. Not repeating the name because I'm not entirely certain, but it would be nice if someone who *does* know could confirm.

from district list serve. very sad news.
"It is with sorrow i spread the news that Kieth Mitchell died today.
As some of you might have witnessed and others might have heard - he
seems to have had a heart attack during the race this morning and
probably died before he reached the pavement.
Many of you knew Kieth as a talented bike racer, and also as someone
who kept pretty much to himself.
What people did not often know about him (because he never mentioned
it) is that in the late 70s and early 80s he was on our olympic and
national track&field team, that he grew up right here in Alexandria,
that his ticket to the world started with a track scholarship to
U.Tennessee, that he competed around the globe, that he later worked
in the intelligence field and rubbed elbows with presidents, that he
helped develop our neighborhood Rec center, that he still coached
junior high level basketball last week, that he was an accomplished
furniture maker, that he leaves behind a wife and two 20-something
children, and that along with his competitive nature - he had a heart
of gold.
If only it had kept beating."
