First try at the Crits...

So my buddy finally called me on it and talked me into doing the San Pedro Grand Prix in Longbeach....the first of my hopefully many to follow crits!!

first off to start with the excuses...

I started a diet 2 weeks ago of NO sugar (refined), no dairy, no meat, no wheat, and no Caffiene...that in itself sucked...i basically pulled myself off it yesterday night as i knew i was racing today...

second...i hadn't (because of the diet) been on the bike but about 60 miles in the last two weeks...the months prior i had ridden about 500ish total so i am in pretty good shape as i commute about 4 days a week...

so onto the setup...we got there lately cause i was the copilot and the longbeach/san pedro area is all a bit confusing...we get there and register...$35 for one day race license and registration blah blah...get dressed and head onto the course...we warmed up for about about 3 laps...course was nice with a LONG front straight climbing about 50' for 1000 yards or so and then a very sharp right 1st corner with another 75ish feet of basically with the exception of the last 200 yards before the last corner leading onto the main straight it was ALL up hill ...but thats ok...i live in socal and you can't throw a dead cat here without hitting a hill to climb.

I took a refuel gel and some sports drink and lined up next to my buddy...the first couple laps were a bit nerve racking as noone holds a line in corners...(cat 5ism?) so coming from a motorcycle racing background i know about apexing...and i understand corner inertia and if i can put an elbow on a guy at 130mph on a streetbike i can hack this 20+ thing huh So the first 4 laps i felt 10-15ish and HR was like 168-173 right on the edge of LT but's my first two laps of the racing debute..i am gonna freak a little huh?...anyways it wasn't that bad at all and averaging about 22ish on speed...

then the misery began shortly there about 20 minutes in with 4 laps left i got a HELLA cramp in my i stood up, turned/twisted and spead up/down to try to work it out...NO JOY.. the cramp got so bad i couldn't hold over 17 on the front straight and got dropped hard ...1 1/2 laps later i pulled myself off as i couldn't breath and probably sounded like i was hyperventilating to people around me cause the cramp was sooooo bad that i had to take such shallow breaths, by this time my HR had went skyward from the lack of O2 (around 189ish)...i literally thought i was going to have to lay down...

So i guess i learned that even though my riding skills (handling) are there (i think) and my legs and heart are fine i need to do something about cramping....i really think i could have pulled top 12 or so without the cramp as i felt great, but i assure you body will pay for it's weakness this week in beatings....... buddy that suckered me into the back spasm from hell WON the race (his first one!!) we had that to toast about...

Hope to see ya guys around more in SoCal!!

All and all i love IT....i will be back!!!!...packing more bananas!!!
