power output chart
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/921...enperkg1lx.jpg im sure many have seen this chart before. does anyone know if it is pretty accurate, are there different/ better charts out there? thanks.
|
I've heard it's low.
|
Ya i thought it might be a little low. I did a computrainer 10k (~15mins) in february which would put me in the 2 catagory and im not at that level.
|
Coggan seems to have revised some of the power levels (mostly upwards):

The chart is pretty much useless for anything but very very broad generalizations.
What are you trying to use it for? |
To get an idea how of benchmarks to shoot for. I guess I just like numbers.

--Steve Well, it puts my FTP and 5-minute power right in the middle of Cat 4 range and I'm a mediocre cat 4, so it seems pretty good to me... :) |
I find my racing license to be a better determinant of what category I'm in ;)
|
What is FTP for those us of unaccustomed to Power Meter speak?

A) You need more. Edit: D'oh, DrPete, I am going to sue you for patent infringement. That is my plan! :D |
The chart is good for identifying your personal strengths/weaknesses, and IMO, that's about where it ends. It's pointed out strengths/weaknesses for me, and helped me tailor my training and racing to my advantage a little bit more.
Like what's been said above though - it's e-wang measuring to bench race your wattage. |
everyone should post their powerprofiles... werd.

^sure it does. It means you strong like bull but think like rock.

Power dosen't win races, skill/brains wins races. Power just keeps you with the field or the break.

It is simply human nature to wonder how one compares with others for any measurement, and cycling power output is certainly no exception to this rule. Consequently, there have been numerous calls for, and some attempts at, generating guidelines or benchmarks for power output based on rider category (i.e., cat. 1, cat. 2, etc.). Aside from satisfying people's natural curiosity, though, such category-based values would seem to have limited practical use - after all, the best measure of a rider's competitive ability relative to that of others is their actual race performance, not their power output. If, however, valid standards were available for power across different durations that represented different physiological characteristics or abilities, then it would be possible to identify a particular individual's relative strengths and weaknesses based on their "power profile". In such an analysis, the primary comparison would therefore be the rider against themselves, and not (directly) against others. Such information could be then used to help plan an appropriate training program, evaluate the effectiveness thereof, and to possibly identify events where an individual might be expected to achieve the greatest success. My goal was therefore to develop rationale guidelines that could be used for this purpose. http://www.cyclingpeakssoftware.com/...11/profile.asp |

Back to California in 8 days, where I can actually take advantage of my lack of kilograms. Newer versions of that chart are more accurate I think. Me, a Cat 2? Nah, Cat 4. Newer charts have me in the Cat 3 range, but for some reason USA Cycling won't approve my upgrade on the chart alone. It is useful to gauge strengths and weaknesses. E.g., high in the 5 min and FTP, low in the neuromuscular or anaerobic part, or vice versa. Other than that, it suffices to feed the need to compare oneself to others. |
For what its worth my power chart is all over the place. My 5sec and 5min put me in very hight Cat4 territory while my 1min is mid Cat5 while my FT is just a little higher than that.

press the printscreen button on your keyboard, go into MSPAINT (except for cypress, because he's a dirty apple using hippie), and then press ctrl + v
