Depressed part 2!
I just got back from my first physical therapy appointment and the therapist said I wouldnt be able to race for 6 months!!! !!!
Im hoping she is way way way wrong on this because i dont understand how a broken wrist could take someone out for that long. She was suprised I was out of a cast already only 2 weeks since surgery so maybe she is confused on the severity of my injury. I have to go to therapy twice a week for the next 8 weeks and thats only for range of motion stuff. Strength therapy would come after that.
She said the surgeon might have other ideas about it and I should ask him which I will when I see him in 4 weeks.
For now Im carrying on as if I am racing in 10 weeks. I wasnt planning on riding out doors for up to 2 months anyway.

Dude I can sympathize. When I got hit by the car I was off the bike for nearly 2 years. I got really fat over that time, I was 95#'s heavier than I am now. I got pretty depressed and kind of just wallowed in my own self pity. I didn't get motivated to ride again until I was so fat that I had man tits.

That just is not going to fly with me Riskus! Get a new Dr., one that is'nt just covering there own ass. Pad up the handle bar. Tape your wrist. Do time trials and modify the bars. Make it happen. You will be on the road in less than 6 weeks.

I don't know how bad your break is but I've seen the same guy in several of my races with a cast on his wrist. I didn't talk to him so I don't know what was broke or how bad but he was racing with a cast.

I'm not an MD so I wouldn't want to be telling you to go off and do whatever, not knowing the details or having any idea what to do about them. However, I can tell you from my own experience that when I broke a few bones several years ago, I was on the bike in a lot less time than the doctor said.
It wasn't that bad of an accident compared to some. I broke several bones in my left hand during a fall. The doctor said no bike for 6 weeks. (ok this pales in comparison to what happened to some of you guys). Anyway, I was riding again in about a week. First it was on a tandem with a friend. All I had to do is hold on with my right hand and rest my cast on the left handlebar. A week later I was back on my own bike after my friend put dual hand controls on my road bike. I didn't have any issues during that time.
I think the main thing they wanted to avoid is me going out and hammering and risking a fall and getting reinjured. That's the problem with athletes. It's easier to tell them to abstain from exercise then it is to say ok to "light" exercise because that could get misinterpreted.
At the very least, have a very blunt and open conversation with your doctor and physical therapist. Be specific about what type of riding you would like to do and see if you can get any more detail out of them.

Plus cycloscross season follows that and I was planning on doing those races too.

I agree that a lot of their caution is regarding the possibility of falling on it again before its finished healing.
In 4 weeks when I speak to the surgeon again I will really dig into him on why or why not i can do certain things.
