Memphis Smith & Nephew Omnium Race Report

I rode the Smith & Nephew Omnium in Memphis this weekend and stayed with fellow forums member Garysol....thanks Gary!

The race was my second race and my first omnium.

Day 1: Road Race

We had an 11:20 am start time. It was hot and there was not a cloud in the sky. The under 35 Cat 5s started off in a hectic pace. A guy attacked at the 1 mile mark and the whole group stood and sprinted after him...the pace didn't let up for the first 6 miles as I was promptly dropped. I started getting small cramps in my quads 4 miles in with the hectic pace and not a good enough warm up. Excuses aside I'm too slow and still too heavy to keep up.

32.27 miles
1:48:53
17.8 mph avg (solo after the first 6 miles)
167 avg Hr
187 max
18th out of 22

Day 1: Time Trial

went out way too hard and was tired by the turn around at 2 miles. I was also having a hard time getting my HR above 171 until the sprint to the finish...and my legs were a bit tired from the road race in the morning.

4 miles
10:40
22.47 avg mph
167 avg Hr
179 max
11th out of 12 who showed

Day 2: Crit

This crit was easily the fastest I have been in! Gary and some of his boys got up front and pushed the tempo hard and I blew up! I was dropped 5 minutes into the 30 minute crit and was lapped at the 15 minute and again at the 30 minute. Luckily for me they didn't pull riders from this crit and it allowed me a good training session after a hard weekend of riding.

13.02 miles
36:41
21.3 avg
155 avg Hr
174 max
11th (enough to earn me points for the Omnium)

I am happy with my results for the weekend. Although I didn't do particularly well, I finished every event and many Cat 5s didn't even show up to all of the events.

My 11th in the crit got me 5 points for the weekend and that put me at 10th in the overall!!!! I can't complain about that!

Hope you dont mind Chris If I add my race report below ya. It was our pleasure putting you up for the weekend and congrats on not forgetting your shoes this time

Stage 1 was the Road Race.
The officials split up the 5's in two groups. The under 34's and over 35's. There were about 40 of us over 35's and we ran the gamut from average enthusiasts to Hard Core Tri Freaks. My goal was to stay up front for the whole race since my sprint when I am tired is not my strongest point. 1st lap in we averaged mid 23mph on the hilly route. We quickly figured who could climb and who couldn't. Luckily I climb pretty well. I stayed top 3 for the first lap and pulled the group for a big portion of the race but the pace was not to bad so I figured I would rather control the speed then have to chase. Lap 2 was more of the same. Three of us on the front did most of the pulling over this lap as well. It was starting to get really hot out. Mid 90's and no clouds. Lap 3 I was still riding top 3 and feeling good. I decided no more pulling as I felt it was time to conserve. As we approached the feed jone I really wanted a cold bottle of water to splash over my head. I tried 5 times and never did get one. I guess I did not slow down enough. On to the last lap.......We picked up the pace to 25ish and started shagging some of the weaker guys off of the back. Last time up the steep climb we put the pedal down. About 10 of us broke away by a few yards and I again found myself in 3rd about 500 meters out. As we came down the front stretch a pack started to come by on my right side so I stood and sprinted for all I was worth. I was able to hold off most of the pack and ended up in 7th.

stats.....

Stage 2....TT.
I suck....I need Aero Bars and TT training . The course was wet and rolling. I really felt good but I think my aero form was a big hold back for me.

Stats
Duration: 10:12
Work: 196 kJ
TSS: 34.5 (intensity factor 1.427)

Pace 2:07 0:00 2:43 min/mi

Stage 3.....The Crit. 30 minutes plus 3 laps

I love Crits. The course was 3 corners flat and fast. Lets of elbows and knees fighting for the metals....LoL. 1 solo crash was the only carnage and I heard it behind me and no, I did not stop. I stayed in the top 5 for the entire event but stayed off the front completely. Last lap we turned up the pace pretty fast. We made the last corner 5 wide and sprinted for the line 300 meters out. A bit farther than I lake but what to do. I was holding my own in the sprint when one of my team members came roaring by for the win. I finished up in 5th and felt like I did all I could do. I held nothing back.

Sharp pics Gary. Did you use your power tap during the race or focus on it?

Gary,

Looking at your power numbers, I think your FTP is significantly higher than you have it set in the program. Just look at the intensity factor - you held an IF of almost 1.1 for 1.5 hours in the road race, so I would guess that your FTP is at least 250-260.

I used the PT for all 3 events. I only focused on it twice though. I used when I was pulling the pack in the RR to make sure I stayed well under my comfort zone and I used it again for the TT. I wanted to keep around 300 watts for the TT but I learned I should have aimed a bit higher. I had a bit left in the tank when the finish line got in sight so I just stood and sprinted for the line till I dumped.

I am still learning that aspect. I had it set to 225. I will put it up to 250 and see how it looks. Thanks for the tip.

Chris, Gary,

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Good going! Sounds like you've both "answered the mail" to the best of your abilities.

For the Roadrace they separated us out into the old guys and the young guns but left us together for the crit race. Very organized event. The officials did a great job keeping to schedule even with the fact that a funeral was going on at the same time as our race and the church was located on the last turn on the RR course and then we had a monsoon just prior to the TT event.

Good job guys.

I can see I need to go race in Tennessee to avoid the steroid eating "cat5-forever" crowd that we have here inFlorida.
