Whispering Wall RR

3 laps of 8.2 mi hilly course, with the last mile of each lap a 12% climb.

Held with the group first half of the first lap. Took a wrong turn at the front of the pack about 4 miles in (no corner marshal to direct us) and spent the next 3 or so miles bridging the ~ 1/2 mile gap back to the group. Caught them at the foot of the 12% climb, and was planning to sit in until final climb on the last lap. Went into the climb pretty easy on the front of the pack, looked back at the top, and had pulled about 100m off the front.

I eased up to let them catch me, and one of them bridged the gap and was keen to make a break for it, so away we went. Worked together for a couple of miles, but she was starting to struggle with the pace. I eased up, but she said that I should keep attacking off the front rather than waiting for her. So I went.

12 miles later I crossed the finish in 1st place, about 7 minutes ahead of the pack.

From speaking to people after the race, I gather the field strung out pretty badly on the second climb, which slowed the pace quite a bit.

Plus, I think I was probably graded a little low for the race, but there you go, a win is a win.
