I started riding in 2001 at 31 years old after a 15 year layoff. Rode for 4 years by myself until meeting someone on the road who raced for the local team. Signed up for said local team the next day. My "training" before I started racing was going out and riding between 30-60 miles a day every day as hard as I could just for fun. I was a pretty good cat 5, decent cat 4 and now a suckfest of a cat 3.

2 years of riding pretty seriously until I got two flats in front of this bike shop with a new racing club... Hmm...I wonder if that broken glass on the road was...

10 months. I wasn't "comfortable" entering races, but wanted to do it.

Forget the "I'm not in good enough shape" jitters. If you want to race, find one that's close, short, and cheap. If you can't keep up, it turns into a $10-15 bike ride.

20 years. Got my first real road bike as a H.S. graduation present. Rode my first bike race when I was 38. I was in decent fitness: I was riding every day with a former Cat 2 and going on the weekly race training rides.

9 or 10 months, I guess. Hard to say when I 'started' riding bikes. In a way you could say I started racing at age 14, about 10 years after I started riding bikes.

20 years of running, so the conditioning was there.
6 weeks on a bike so the pack skills were not.

IMO the only way to gauge your "racing fitness" is to either race or find a weekly ride that simulates racing. I "thought" I was in decent enough shape after about a year and a half of riding but soon realized that I wasn't in any kind of "racing" shape. As someone stated earlier get out there and try it, worst case scenario consider it a "charity" ride you donated to...

Then you are just waiting 3-4 months to find out if your training right. Excuses are like, well, you know, every one has one.

It was probably 6 months for me, I think. It's tough to guage, because I got hit by a car and that laid me up for three months off the bike, right in the middle of the 6 months.

When I started racing, I was in great condition though. I was training regularly with Cat 1s and 2s in Colorado. They could out-climb me, but I could out-sprint them easily. My 1-minute effort was really strong too. Coming off that injury, I was really motivated and got on form in a big hurry. That probably led to my burnout as well

This was at age 21... long time ago...

You could easily outsprint Cat. 1 racers as a beginner? Sweet.
