Ouch!

May not be the right forum to discuss this issue but I trust the posters here. If you think it should be moved let me know and I'll ask the mods to move it.

While reaching down to pickup a water can to fill the bird bath...BAM; Pain so intense the knees buckle and I lean against the house for support. My lower back right of the spinal column radiating through the right hip is knotted in pain. Now I have had back strains before but I have been able to work them out. This is intense. I made it to work but did not last long. I went to a sport's masseuse and she "released the muscles but the pain became even more intense. I can barely walk on my right leg.

Has anyone ever experienced this. The masseuse said she sees this in runners. If you have had it what did you do to relax the muscles or should I just head to the doctors office?

Any help appreciated?

jeeez greg that sounds awful. I wish I had some advice to give you. I dont think you can go wrong by seeing a doctor. This stuff always happens right before the weekend doesnt it.

Try taking a Midol.

(seriously)

DrPete 07-13-07 06:35 PM

Greg, it sounds like you may have herniated a disc. You need to see a doc, especially if your legs are buckling and stuff like that.

Sorry to hear it happened, though.

How old are you? have you had any back injuries before?

about 6 minths ago- i was piggy-back carrying my 8 year old to bed. i bent over at the waiste (bad idea) and it felt like somebody shot me in the back.

i too buckled to the ground and it took easily two weeks to get back to normal.

now- some of its age... some of its getting thrown off motorcycles for the last 15 years...

so ive got some strikes against me. i just have really be carefull every moment in every action.

if you have outside reasons (age/injuries/etc) it'll probably go away and i hope youve learned a lesson to 1)always be careful and 2) do some excersize to strengthen the back

if this was just out of the blue- a lightning bolt in the kidneys...

then you might have something alot worse and i'd get it checked out.

Not diagnosable on the telephone. Could be anything from a blown disc to a severe muscle spasm.

SEE A DOCTOR (I'd suggest a sports medicine guy)

I had that happen before, and I feel for you. I couldn't stand up, and couldn't sit down. I actually called a doctor to my hotel room. I was out of town. I pinched a nerve. I think it was called the siatic(sp) nerve.

Good luck,
Richard

Man, that sucks. Good luck at the doc.

Greg180 07-13-07 09:09 PM

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll do the cold treatments and Advil for the weekend. But I am definitely going to locate a good sports medicine doctor by Monday. I was seven weeks into my training schedule for the TOTHT and do not want to lose too much time. I may still be able to use a computrainer to do some low volume but very specific training.

It just sucks...Period!

I will second the motion here.

A riding and racing budy of mine had similar symptoms this spring. Unfortunately he ignored the symptoms and kept riding in pain. His back pain and numbness got worse and worse before he saw a doc. He ended up being diagnosed with a herneated disc. Physical therapy, mesage, cotisone? injections, and acupuncture coudln't touch his symptoms. Just yestarday he called me from the hospital with news that he'd undergone surgery. Hopefully his recovery will be quick.

What I don't know is how much damage he did by ignoring the symptoms and continuing to ride. Does the condition improve with rest? Dunno, but I think you're smart to go to the doc. Good luck.

Call me kooky, but it sounds like his missed chiropractic in there. Just sayin'.

I'll chime in with the disc issue as well.....I've had issues with L4/S5 for years...car accidents, construction accidents, and youthful stupidity have all caught up with me. Now I have a slightly bulging disc and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the path within the disc that nerves travel through) I've had epidural cortisone injections, physical therapy, traction, etc. You just need to be extra cognizent with what you do and what position you put your back in...I'm 44 and cycling has been the best therapy for me as I can push myself as hard as I want without doing any (additional) damage to my back. You may have to layoff for awhile but I would avoid surgery at all costs if possible. Recent studies that have been in the news seem to state that back surgery patients fair no better than those with the same symptoms who do not choose surgery....over the long term....

Hope you feel better soon and are able to get back on the bike ! :)

Oh, he may have visited the chiropractor as well, but I think that was only one visit due to insurance not covering chiropractic care ;)

I'm asking out of ignorance--how does a chiropractor fix a herniated disc?

TSUTexan93 07-14-07 06:32 PM

Sorry dude. Sounds like a disc. Happened to me in January. Had the same sciatic nerve issues in the left leg. Just got it fixed this week so I'm out a few weeks. Get to a doc and get an MRI.
