Question About Power Training

I just went out for a quick 20 min test to see where my power was. It wasn't ideal at all since it was getting dark and I had to do a quick warmup. Also I stayed in my neighborhood so I would have some saftey of street lights.

Now does the slowing and going hurt my test or help it? Can I say that the results are accurate or no? Next month I will be doing a 20k TT again so I know that will be a good test, but hoping that my results today are something I "could" safely use for the TT.

Also I don't think I was going hard enough cause my HR was only ~160-170 and my max is around 200.

Thanks,

Ryan

Sorry to say...pretty much useless for a baseline.

Kinda what I thought. Does this make it higher you think or less?

You need to do an all out 20 minute effort without stops if possible. That will give you a baseline to work with. Start ups and slow downs will give you an inconsistent reading.

The way you did it, your reading will be lower than a consistent 20 minute effort.

Would it be best to do it on the Trainer? Only reason I ask is there is almost no chance of finding any road that I can go 20 mins on without a stop sign, light, car, deer, dog, etc slowing me down

Don't fall into the trap that an all out 20 minute effort is a good threshold test.

I'm not at this point, but it is a decent way for me to start some training. I am still very weak and new to cycling.
