Would you race with a broken rib?

Would you race with a broken rib?

So today I was involved with a sprint finish crash that left me covered with road rash, a gashed elbow, and most likely a broken rib. I am registered to do two crits next weekend and have a hotel room reserved. First goal is to get the two races in so I can move to Cat 4, so I can get to Cat 3, etc. Second goal is to do well.

So, I know that I can only get %50 of my money back for the room, but do they usually give out refunds for the races?

And of course, am I just an idiot and should heal up?

Most places here would be no refund. It's your body, listen to what it tells you. If I wasn't in too much pain, I personally would do it. I'm not the brightest bulb though.

Just take some rides through the week and take it day by day. The problem is the last few laps when your lungs are screaming................that rapid chest expansion is going to hurt like a MF'r.

If i were 20 something and getting paid to race the bike, yeah probably i would race. But since im 44, no. Bike racing is an advocation, not a vocation for me. I had a couple of paid entries to races last year that i passed on to teamates on waiting lists after my crash left me with a trashed knee.

Pay it forward and heal up.

I'd go, and if it hurts too much, or if a doctor told you you would be risking more down the road, then I would do several of the following:

1. Be a volunteer marshall
2. Schmooze chicks or romance the wife on a weekend away.
3. Watch and yell indiscriminantly at other cat 5's, just to toughen them up and make them think you are a stalker
4. work on your sports photography skills
5. Tell the wife/partner/gfriend your going to the race, but go to Vegas and see if you can earn some big cash and then spend it on your bike stuff...

My buddy raced the Cascade Classic with 1 broken finger and 2 broken ribs.

But... he's one of the toughest pros around.

I've done it. If you can breath and ride the bike without discomfort, it's not that bad. I was unable to ride out of the saddle w/out significant pain so that was the biggest issue for me.

You're the only one who can really answer your question, so give it a few days, keep riding and then decide.

If you have a broken rib, riding will be painful. But . . . crashing would be very inconvenient. Broken ribs tend to puncture important organs when you crash on them while they're still broken. A punctured lung (or worse) would keep you out for a lot longer than the original injury.

Bring a frame pump. When they're warming up on the trainer, ride beside them and push it into their front wheel.

When they look at you funny, tell them you're just practicing.

"Most likely a broken rib . . . " does not mean it's broken . . . could be cracked or one heck of a bruise.
Get an x-ray done to make sure; you are not a doctor.
Have crashed and broken 6 ribs/punctured a lung . . . yeah, was off the bike for a spell.

I would.

Rule of thumb is to plan accordingly as though you are going to race and make your decision while warming up on the trainer. Sometimes all it takes is a few minutes on the trainer to work the soreness out of your body.

Personally, I wouldn't. Even if it didn't hurt....it's the possibility of crashing in the next race and really doing some damage that would prevent me from doing it. Then again, I don't get paid to race.

The doctor said he couldn't see a fracture. So, it is possible it is just a bad bruise. Or cracked? What is the difference between broken and cracked? Would that show up in an x-ray?

More good news, I did a 3.5 hour ride today... with hydrocodone. It wore off after about 2 hours. Ribs were uncomortable and painful, but not enough to plan on not racing. So, I will race this weekend.

Sweet...

I rode the Mt Hood stage race, a climbing RR, and another crit with a broken rib. Even took a prime in the crit .

If it's just cracked it's no big deal, other than the pain and the breathing thing. If it's snapped into pieces I'd avoid it in fear of puncturing a lung.

Ribs are made to break, I've never certainly broken a rib, I won't go to the doctor for that. The only thing that they can do is say "Well its broken, here's some hydrocodone, take it easy for a week." I wouldn't take any more opiates though, bad *****, next time tell them you want motron 800.

Real men don't know when their ribs are broken, they think it's just from laughing too hard.
