Teamates

So does anyone else have a teamate(s) that are difficult to deal with?
Anyone who doesn't get the concept of racing being a team sport and will chase you down in a breakaway, dragging the pack with him, so he can sprint for the prime or the finish?

I do.

I tried to tell him why it's not cool do that, but he doesn't see anything wrong with it because, "I was out for the W." Team tactics are lost on him. It's either he wins or doesn't.

Guess I've already decided not work with him anymore and it's time to shop for a new team.
Drastic of me? But give me a reason why I should stick it out with a team where one of the strongest guys rides for himself and doesn't see anything wrong with snatching success from a teamate's hands.

Team? Whassat? I just try to get my team to ride in any weather to train, let alone go to races. If you consider that difficult to deal with, then yes. I have a team full of them.

What cat are you? If cat four or five then it doesn't really suprise me. It's not the right thing to do but it is somewhat common. If cat 1/2/3 then it would be very rare.

Either way, if you aren't happy then yes, find a new team or just race solo.

LowCel....We're both 4's, soon to be 3's.
This kind of racing is common out there among the 4's and 5's?
That sucks.
I've seen many boneheaded things done and lots of negative racing where no one wants to work, but very rarely have I seen a teamate intentionally attack his own guys.

Yeah, we have 7 regulars in our races. 4 of us work well together, 2 of them are off the back and then talk about how well they did and one attacks from the bell, gets caught and sucks wheel the rest of the race.

It sucks because last year we had a really solid group of guys that had one common goal and plan. I'm waiting until Sept 1, after the state crit championchips and 3 of us are moving up where our 3's really race well together.

I feel your pain man.

that's a shame, if you can actually get a team to work together well in the 4's, you can dominate all the other teams that just race for themselves.

Either get the team to drop the rider, or look for another

It's pretty bad, I only get to do one or two races a year with my team so I don't get to work on team tactics that much. However I am lucky in a way. When doing the races around Columbus it seems like I have managed to make friends there on quite a few teams so I generally have someone to work with.

I'd like to think that ideally, there's a balance between these two ideas. Both are equally important...or should be. At times, it makes sense for someone to sacrifice their own glory for a teammate's and the team will function more effectively if people can let their personal egos not get in the way all the time. It is about rider strength. You want to set your sprinters up if it's going to be a sprint finish or help your climbers out if it's a hilly race and they have the best shot.

My main problem with my teammate is that all he cares about is winning....regardless of the cost. An example. The other day at a crit, a fellow teammate was in a strong beak with about 4 laps to go. The teammate in question, decided he wanted the win and chased the break down. Had he done so by breaking away from the chase group and bridging, I wouldn't have thought too much about it. But he did so by dragging the whole field up to them and he happened to take the final sprint as well because he's so strong. I tried to explain to him that he should have bridged on his own or been in the break to begin with. But he didn't care even after I told him he's earning a rep. among the peleton as someone who won't work with anyone.

Yesterday in another crit, I had been off the front more or less soloing for about 5 or 6 laps when the prime bell sounded. Coming out of the last corner, I see him chasing me down....and bringing the pack with him so he can take the prime. Prior to this he had more or less been sitting in the entire race. So not only did he out sprint me for the prime, he shut down my breakaway as well. That's why I don't want to ride with him anymore. I totally admire his drive, dedication, strength and spirit. But all he cares about is his winning and refuses to acknowledge his fellow teammates. Everyone is wondering why they should help him out when they know that he'll attack them if it suits his goals.

^^^^ Does the general peloton know this guy is being a doofus? I hope the other dudes from other teams realize he is a selfish racer and punish him accordingly

Then maybe he is the one that needs to be without a team?! I would venture to say if he gets no help from anyone he would quickly realize the help he has been getting. If it were me I wouldn't even think twice about helping someone like that, ask one of my teammates if I ever help him. He never does anything with the team concept in mind, so other than us all wearing the same kits we let him do his own thing and pass him along the way in. Now the guy I'm talking about does NOTHING with the team, from racing to training to corresponding, so I'm not really even sure why he's on it?

Are any of the other guys good enough to win? You said he is one of the strongest guys.

Not sure if we can boot him or not, to be honest. The problem is, he's probably become the strongest guy on the team and one of the stronger guys in the field. Actually, he and I are closely matched...I'm a bit better climber but he's a stronger sprinter. But he's got age on his side...19 years old vs. my 40. So as far as crits go, I won't have much success if I just ride his wheel and try to jump at the 200m mark. But while he's still a teammate, I don't feel really justified in attacking him and putting him on the defensive. Many guys in the field are beginning to understand his methods, but you know how the 4's are....strategy is an afterthought and few guys are really strong enough to do more than just ride the pack out. I've already gotten an invite to join another team this morning from a great guy who races Masters. Having done a few Masters races and my Thursday Night ride is composed of mostly Masters, 1/2's and 3's....I'm really leaning towards that option. Definitely more challenging....but the racing is better.
