Anyone else do Tour d Burg?
If you raced and care to share, post it here.
I got in about 20 min. on the trainer before I headed to the line and dropped off my spare wheels. Once the course was open I headed out for a few laps. When they said the course was rough, they weren't kidding. One longish section of old brick pavers, plenty of dips and holes, manhole covers and paver crosswalks. Just what a newbe like me needs.
I must have lost track of time, cause I came onto the finish stretch and everyone was lined up. So much for starting in the front. The Cat 5 race was only 20 min. + 3 laps. They started the 4's 60 sec. in front of us. Looking around at the field, 28 started, I seen a couple of guys wearing plain cotton T-shirts. I'm nothing but a rookie myself, but these guys even made me shake a little.
Horn sounds and we're off. I clip in real quick and do a zig-zag sprint. Went through the first corner about 12th. Mr. T-shirt was about 10th and he was leaving a pretty big gap in front of him. It took a couple of corners until it was my turn to pass him and I had about a 25 foot gap to fill. The pace was pretty crazy and I pretty much felt totaly redlined by lap 2. I just tried to stay focused on keeping a clean line and did my best not to look at the HR monitor.
For the most part I just floated back and forth between 12th and about 9th. I was mostly running with two other guys who were both on Orbea Orca's. Brave riders to put that frame in a Cat 5 crit. Everyone sat up a little at the begining of the last lap. I'm thinking, oh crap there going to take off like crazy on the long finishing straight. Out of the last corner everyone took off pretty hard. I stayed in line and stayed seated just trying to hold on and not black out. About 100 yards out I went ahead and clicked up a gear and stood up. I was thinking I should a least stand up and pedal across the line so I wouldn't look totally stupid. Well come to find out, everyone else was just as gassed as I was. My sprint rocketed me up another whole 2 mph and I got by 4 guys for a 7th place finish.
I crossed the line and seen my wife and daughter cheering for me, as I eased up and coasted around turn #1, it took every bit of will power I had to keep the vomit from coming up past my throat. I think I truely seen stars (and maybe Elvis).
Well thats my story, I'm pretty pleased coming off a crash last weekend.
How did you do?

Nice job! I skipped this race due to the course conditions you mentioned (I wrecked there two years ago). With all day to have races (celebrity race, kids races AND clergy race included) why would they put the cat 4's on at the same time?
That little slow down happened in just about every cat 5 and cat 4 crit I was in, usually around one lap to go.

hmm......I think if I could have attacked right then I might have got away as everyone seemed gassed out. Problem was, I was gassed out too . Maybe as my fittness improves for next year I can play that card.

I raced after Shayne in the Masters. With 3 age brackets it was confusing to keep track of who to cover and let go. Add that to my disdain of crits and the condition of race course and I was ready for it to end. Some freak solo'd off the front halfway thru race and lapped our main pack with 1 to go. Pack finish and saw Shayne and Cslone there. They really need to hold that race somewhere else next year.

The results are now posted and it looks like they took a spot away from me. Now they have me at 8th. What a bummer. Oh well, 7th and 8th pay the same, $0.00.

Yep, in the 4's, as you guys all saw.
Working for our #1 sprinter to get some upgrade points. I tried to initially string out the field and took some good long pulls into the wind. The pace stayed up pretty quick for the first half of the race. 5 attacks came throughout the race and I went after all of them. The problem was that every one, ended up with me pulling the field up with me. The 6th attack went off when I was in the middle taking a breather. It ended up staying off as nobody in the pack would really chase. By the end, I was pretty spent and just sat in for 14th place.

nice job to all of those who finished, unlike myself. however, there was that little outdoor resteraunt that was on the interior of the course that made for a very good post race hangout. i went there with my teammates, had my first beer in, well, my life, and ate broccoli and mashed taters under a beautiful blue sky while watching the 1/2 race. it was truly a fantastic experience. i bought my teammates a pitcher for the dayton crit money that they deserved. nothing quite like a cool drink, crisp vegetables, a blue sky and bike racing. oh yeah, and i climbed that hill across the river and got tar on my tires after the race. plus, it was my last race as a 4 (tear). fun day despite the poor performance.
