Lapped, and lapped again

Interesting weekend. Saturday's crit was a 35/45 open (raced together, picked separately). When the new 40-45 Nat'l crit champ showed up wearing the jersey I knew it would be fast. I've raced against him before and hung though, so I wasn't too worried.

A few laps in Dick became aware of Guido having a bad day. A very bad day. When the break went off they both were there, but barely. Someone turned the volume down to around 7...just couldn't get going at all.

5 laps in Dick made a couple of bad decisions, got caught in the wind too long after trying to move up to avoid some of the surges, and popped Guido. He then made Guido suffer more by riding in no man's land for the next 30 minutes. Dick can be prideful like that. It was horrible to watch as Dick began beating him when what was left of the original break got close to lapping them. It was worse when they finally did, 100m from the finish line.

What was left of the rest of the field didn't catch them. Awarded 4th place. Prizes went three deep of course. My teammate gets 2rd.

None of us were looking forward to Sunday.

Guido showed up recovered like an old sofa though. 45 open race. 4 man break went off with yet another (former) nat'l champ and my teammate who got 2nd the day before, so Dick had Guido shut it down and help create a gap. Remainder of the race was time mostly spent in a separate break outnumbered by one team with yet ANOTHER (former) Nat'l champ in it. 3 of them 3 of us wearing different colors. 20 minutes of attack/counter until...dang it, the front group pops my teammate. We eventually gather him up and let the field catch us because of all the games...and them taking a free ride with the three guys left in the break who lapped us. Yeesh.

Finale is a sprint contested by the break guys and another couple of us. Teams gets 4th, I get 5th, so we essentially won the field sprint. Payout is six deep so after the split I come home with 3 pounds of coffee, some cash, and a variety of Gu, and feeling slightly less bug and very slightly more windshield than the day before.

Age graded championships were a few weeks ago. US men/women elite and USPRO are at downer's grove.
