Cat 5 to Pro winner in a year?

Can this be right?

"In March of last year, he began competitive cycling as a category five rider, a beginner.

Last Sunday afternoon, Young left an international field in his wake to win the men's pro cycling race at the Silver Spring Grand Prix."

2 seasons to go from 5 to 1 or 2 is very impressive and he is a talent but not unheard of, our very own Pizzaman went from 5 to 2 in one season.

I've raced against Ken a bunch, and even managed to beat him a few times. He's the real deal, he started last season as a 5, won like 7 of 10 of his races as a Cat 5, upgraded to Cat 4, then to a 3 last year. In the spring, he won the Cat 3 RR at Valley of the Sun, and was 2nd on GC - I think, and upgraded to Cat 2. I think he's still a Cat 2, the Silver Spring Crit was a P/1/2/3 field. A great win for him, he'll be a 1 by seasons end, if not already.

i've heard of some women in the pro ranks who catted up from 4 to pro in a year or year and a half too. If people have the talent, the time and the racing smarts I think it's very possible. (but takes commitment)

Happens all the time from 5 to cat2.
The move to cat1 is rarer in just one year, but it's not unheard of.
Pro by years end depends on who he meets.

funny. ken young is a solid brick of muscle and he clearly trains his ass off.

I am a 3 now but started out with him in the 5s. I haven't interacted with him much, but he's one of those racers that was always showing how powerful he was... now he also has the experience to go with that strength. we have some amazing talent in MABRA.

One year? How about one race? Mike Engleman won his first race against a P/1/2 field as a Cat 4. It was a hill climb, and he set a course record. It was so fast that he was DQ'd (edit: they didn't believe he started in the right pack). The next year, he broke the record again, and it stood for 12 years. They credited him with the win the previous year

I'm not surprised given his athletic background. 4 years football and a lot of endurance running it looks like. Maybe he should have even upgraded quicker.

Saying he went from 5 to pro is misleading if he never needed to be in cat 5, which is probably the case.

Happens all the time, people change from another sport to cycling and find that they use the same heart and legs in both.

Didn't Andy Bishop go from cat 4 to Tour de France in 2 years?

Also...if you train over 250 miles per week and race every weekend you are going to leapfrog a bunch of people in the cycling foodchain. Then if you happen to have good genetics on top of that, you are going to make extraordinary progress.

I know a couple women who went from Cat 5 to World Cup (and one to Worlds) on the track in about a year.

They were both elite triathletes when they started, so they were already pretty strong.

How about 5 to Pro in a couple of months?

Cameron Wurf- AUS

Started racing last September or October. Rode for Priority Health for a couple races, now onto another team. (First stage race ever was Tour of Georgia)

He's also an Olympic level rower.
