What, pray tell, is a handicap race?
Didn't you just take a GC in a Master's race a few weeks back?

No, no GC (unfortunately).

In a handicap race, everyone is placed into a single division (ie. all competing for top three places), but the lower grade riders get a headstart on the higher grade riders. All it really means, is that the top grade riders win everything, whilst the lowest grade riders get overtaken by the faster groups 20-30 km in and get pulled. I didn't even get to finish, I got overtaken 22 km into a 110km race.

It was a waste of a beautiful day.

They don't do handicap races where I live. But being the only one to show up for your class is also a wasted day. They shorten the length drastically if there are 2 entrants, and if you're the only one they hand you a medal and ask if you want to race in a different (harder) category for free.

I was in a handicap race last year (second race ever, 5 weeks into cycling) and I was put in the C group with 2 middle-aged women and 1 18ish year old. Him and I dropped the women on the first climb 1 mile into the race, then on the 2nd climb about 4 miles later i got dropped by him... rode 15 miles by myself and got picked up by the B Group, rode 10 miles with them, then the A Group flew by and took the Bs with it and I got dropped with 5 miles to go.

They really aren't fun for beginners, but at the same time riding with the B group really gave me motivation to become good enough to ride with them on the regular this year and that has happened so it was worth it i think.
