Riding to Floyd Bennett Field?
Has anybody here ever ridden to FBF? I am wondering if there is a route which is more bike friendly. From the looks of it(sattelite), all of the roads nearby are pretty large/high volume.

Neptune and Emmons are easy to ride. There are greenways for at least 1 mile in almost all directions to FBF. Shore Parkway Greenway (the part northeast of FBF) is nice, although I believe there is a section near Spring Creek Park that is under construction and impassible. The other Shore Parkway Greenway will take you down to Coney Island, and that's pretty clear. Ocean Parkway is medium busy, the greenway is physically separated from traffic. Lots of intersections though. Bedford is pretty sweet. A lot of the smaller streets in between (e.g. 19th Street) have almost no traffic. |
thanks for the input Bacciagalupe, but I think that it might help if I clarify a bit.
I wouldn't ride Ocean Pkwy because the greenway is too slow and pedestrians can be much less predictable than cars. If you guys don't advise against it, I was just going to go the most direct route which is straght down Flatbush Ave. |

you could also take bedford ave all the way to the end, left on emmons ave to the belt pkwy bike path which brings you to flatbush.

I ride over the manhattan bridge (which lets you out at Jay St, go south on that and make a L on Tillary, then R on Flatbush), take flatbush to and past prospect park, then turn R at the end of the park to go down ocean (at 5:00 flatbush becomes mayhem). Floyd Bennett is essentially on flatbush, all the way at the end, but you have a number of options to get back onto it. Going left on Ditmas is what I do, it's the shortest route by distance, but you can continue on ocean all the way until Avenue U if you want. The longer you go on Ocean the more length you'll be adding to your trip.
This is all on roads, but I've never found the traffic to be bad until you approach the belt parkway. The pavement gets really crappy there and the speed of traffic increases considerably. There is a bike path that runs on the east side of the street after you cross over the belt parkway, but it's easy to miss. Once you see Floyd Bennett on your left, enter through a set of iron gates (you'll go down a curb, it looks kind of like a pedestrian entrance), and then head east. The location of the race isn't particularly well signed, but if you're almost sure to see other riders. This may not be the best way to get there, but it works for me. |

i always take bedford ave. (on street bike path), all the way to the end, then emmons to the bike path (off street) which leads to FBF. From prospect park, i think it's about 30 mintues or so at an easy warm-up pace.
i avoid flatbush, but my comfort level around high speed traffic is pretty low, so you might feel fine taking that. |
