Cross season/base Monkeywrench.
Ugh.
Today during lunchtime sprints I ate a giant bag of hurt. My FD's upper limit was out too far, and my frame is a little flexy in the BB...end result is that several kicks into a 53-12 sprint I lost the chain, the bike went wonky - and I went down. At somewhere around 31mph.
It's funny, as I'm in the air, I'm thinking "man this is gonna hurt" and you know what? It did. A lot. Two cars rolled by without stopping, and this is on a backroad on Fort Bragg. Well f**k you very much guys.
It took me a minute to regain my composure, but a nice guy stopped and gave me a ride back to work. I took a shower, and I imagine any passers by were suspicious that a **** was going on, judging from my horrifically profane utterances as the soap and water made their way into my wounds.
I got cleaned up, and examined my stuff. My helmet is trashed, and judging from the knock it took, and scrapes on it - I'd have been in a world of mess without it. Then I headed to the Doc, and got patched up properly. Apparently it's just road rash, and a lot of suck. I got some pain killers, so I apologize for any incoherence. I didn't want to take anything to muddy my brain during work, and subsequent 5 hours of night school, so I held off until 40 minutes ago. I do feel much better now
The worst part? I'm still thinking about racing this weekend...shouldering the bike is gonna ROCK.

Ugh. That split second between the bike going wonky and hitting the ground is major suck. And then it gets worse.
Glad you're relatively OK.

Oh, man, that blows. Obligatory helmet plug: glad you were wearing it, etc. etc. Also, I'm glad to hear you're still going to try to come to H'ville. Even if you end up not racing, it should still be a great weekend. Hopefully see you on Saturday.

Wow. Last time I went down, I had the same feeling as it happened: ohh, this is gonna be a bad one. And it was: trashed helmet, jersey, and RD hanger, and lots of blood. Funny how time slows down as you're going down.
Glad you're feeling well enough to race this weekend, though.

Bummer - it always sucks to go down, but it is the worst when it is during training and at 31 mph. Glad you are mostly OK. Enjoy the meds (but not too much).

Bleh. It feels worse today, I'm stuck on 24hr duty here, so sitting around all day and all night in boots and ACUs with roadrash all over the place is a PARTY.
New Year's resolution: Don't crash.

Slow-mo crashes are the most fun. I've been riding the mountain bike a ton this fall, and I encounter tons of these...I just try to remember to tuck and roll. Then again, mountain crashes never seem to hurt as bad as road crashes.

one good thing about bicycle crashes, they usually happens so fast you don't have time to dread the impact, like a band aid pulled off real fast, OUCH!
who did i run over, and how come every jerk in spandex aimed their wheels for my neck... oh ya, cause of all the pre race **** talking i did...
glad you survived

Yeah, July/August work got crazy, so I couldn't ride very much, then I got married in September. Throw in a honeymoon, etc, etc and you get the picture
I'm back up and riding...funny enough on the team ride this past weekend, the exact same thing happened to me. I didn't go down thankfully, but I nailed my knee on the end of the handlebars...hurt like a mofo, but nothing like what happened to you. Same problem, FD out of adjustment, flexy BB...also slightly bent 53 chainring.

Seriously, rest and healing is a part of training. Take some time to get your body healed then go do some quality training like maybe HALO...

Greg: We ARE soft. I've spent more time in "sensitivity" training than I have at the range in the last two years Then again, I'm the epitome of a staff weenie...
As an aside - I seem to have buggered my right knee something awful backpacking this weekend. I intended to do an 80 mile/5 day trip up the Foothills Trail on the NC/SC border. About 13 miles in I slip and tweak my knee badly, to the tune of a large POP POP and instant pain. So, I decide it's a good idea to keep going for another 20 miles, currently it's puffed up like a balloon, and I can't move it very far. Hey, maybe if I'm lucky I tore the REPLACEMENT ACL.
I quit. Maybe I can find solace in video games

I feel your pain. Literally. I went over some wet railroad tracks yesterday at 25mph and went down hard. No breaks, but my knee and ankle are bruised up nicely and my PT wheel is toast. Add that to the fact that I'm about 10 pounds above my race weight and am not finding enough quality riding time and I'm about ready to call next season a bust before it even starts.

Sorry to here. I hope you heal up well.
Mine was kind of the opposite: I hit loose asphalt and slid on my right side. It was is slo-mo but I didn't think of the pain. I was thinking of the new white tape I just wrapped my bars in. Then I stood up to check the bike damage and people started gagging as I bleed all over the place.
