winter training bike

Alright so as a present for finishing some side writing jobs (sidenote: BRAIN is the cycling journal to write for if you want to make cash) I'm looking to build up a winter training rig. The goal is aluminum or steel, sub-$1000 sans wheels with either Shimano 10 or SRAM, and most importantly the clearance to run full fenders front and rear with something close to race geometry. Ideas folks?

Might I suggest...9 speed disc wheeled cross bike? Saves the rims (and better wet braking to boot), you can use hardier MTB drive train bits*, and mine came with fender mounts and plenty of clearance.

*I need the 11-32 for climbing in the snow

Then I'd recommend an old Bridgestone RB-1. Back in the early 90s lots of racers used them for cyclocross and road duty. They have a lot of clearance if you get the stock fork. You can run some 28c CC tires.

Find a frameset and put whatever group on it you like (though you'll have a threaded headset and stem to deal with). Unfortunately, the RB1s are still bringing $300-$400 even when they're 17 years old, so no super bargain here, but it is a nice frame.

Let me know if you want some brake-bridge clearance photos. My hill-repeat bike is a single-speed RB-1.

Wheelbase is stupid long, prefer closer to a 73 degree headtube (better at speed) and the BB is 2cm higher than where I'd like it. All together equals blech ride for the road.

Just out of curiosity, what gearing are you running on this bike? I'm building up a single speed for hill repeats and commuting, and decided eventually on a 39x16. But I think that might be a bit heavy for grades > 5%. Not sure though, don't really have the experience.

It's tough to get clearance for fenders and tread with a short wheelbase... same goes for steeper head tubes (which also shorten the wheelbase). Maybe you should just get a rain-bike and wear dark kits and socks

My normal hill is 8.5% average, but near 20% at the bottom. I'm just a touch over-geared in a 39-22.

It's a tough gear to have on a bike though, because everywhere else, I'm spinning around at 14 mph at ~100 rpm. Yesterday, I hit 28.5mph on a false-flat descent, still in contact with the drivetrain... 205 rpm

I can see why you'd go 39x22 on a 20% grade! I'm hoping that 39x16 will be a nice compromise for shallow hills (<6%) and for commuting.
