where are you guys racing that races are only $12?
The only rule in the RMCCC is that the whole weekend has to be $50 or less. So its usually $20 for the first two races and $10 for a third.

Although your entire post was great, I wanted to add to this that I have talked with company owners who have pulled sponsorship because they received phone calls from people angry at the way someone acted while wearing their banner (this relates to both cycling teams and street driven race cars)

MWCCC has rules to keep it cheaper I guess. At a "home" race, it's just $2, I think.

Send in some pics of the riders on the podium and of them riding in races. Sponsors will sponsor you for how much exposure you give them. Send them your training schedule, pictures, finishes, blah blah blah.
If you haven't raced or finished on the podium photoshop yourself there...
You will most likely get a pretty good discount on equipment but most likely no freebies.
