Wow, what a sad story...

No official cause of death as of yet. It's a shame to hear of this happening both around this time of year and to a guy who has a wife and a child on the way . At 40 it seemed he was really young for something like this to happen.

Man, I feel for his wife, and moreso, his baby.

Let's just hope it wasn't that dirty word.

As a paramedic, I can assure you people die all the time without using EPO!!!
With people involved in our sport saying things like this, how can we expect the general public to ever look at cycling as a true sport?
Anyway- back to isue at hand- We all need to keep this family in our prayers. We also need to give our loved one's an extra hug...life is short.

Vaya con Dios.

Never knew or even met but I'm saddened by this news. God's peace to his family.

Bodaciousguy, the true definition of a jerk is someone who doesn't realize how stupid their comments really are. No sense replying as I will not engage in flaming on this thread.

People are saying it because IT is the most abused drug in the sport. That may not be the cause of Mike's death, and regardless of whether it was or not (and we may never know either way), his death is a tragedy, made worse by the fact that his wife is carrying his unborn baby.

But don't blast the guy who says what many of us would guess is the cause (if we had to guess - and let's face it, when a young, healthy guy drops dead for unknown reasons, we are prone to guess).

There's still no need for the juvenile, classless response that was posted earlier!

That is extremely sad. 40 is such a young age these days. I hope the family stays strong to support the wife and baby so they can get through such a tragic time. Losing parental figures is extremely hard. Its just so sad. my condolences to the family

you certainly can question the tact of raising the EPO question at this time with nothing more than speculation.

However you know we all thought about it. Relatively young man, trained professional athlete, dies in his sleep. It is consistent with a number of reported EPO deaths in the late 90's.

I wonder what sort of drug testing is done in endurance events like the 24 hours of Moab. My guess is not much.

if drugs had nothing to do with this tragedy an additional tragedy will be that Cycling is at such a point that any unexpected death of a cyclist is clouded with the suspicion of drugs.

Whatever the cause, his death is a tragedy and my prayers are with his family.

Interesting responses on morality, if this were a European rider, you guys would be all over this with racist, nationalist or otherwise ignorant comments typical of this forum.

I'll wait for the autopsy press release.

Doc- You think we are blinded by patriotism? If a rider is busted for questionable behavior then sure fire off the doping, alcoholism, child abuse or any other insult you see fit but when a guy dies leaving behind a wife and soon to be newborn I think it is tragic regardless of nationality.

Exactly. Everyone seems to be on their high horse for not saying what they were thinking.

Jeeez, that sucks....

But not uncommon for endurance athletes to myseteriously pass away for no reason (especially cyclists and runners). Perhaps there was some funny business of some kind going on and then maybe not. Hopefully the autopsy will uncover something or nothing at all. Don't pass judgement quite yet!
