Frozen Toes Race, Columbia Missouri

Anyone planning to go to the Frozen Toes Road race in Columbia Missouri? I'm thinking about driving over from the Kansas City area.

aggro_jo 02-20-08 01:19 PM

it will be my road racing debut. I cant wait

gnug125 02-20-08 03:15 PM

Congratz! It will be my second and the first I finish (assuming I do) in my first I was involved in a crash which dampened my spirits last year.

aggro_jo 02-20-08 03:19 PM

cool.
If you see a dude on a aluminum(natural) TCR wearing red and black DogFish Apparel kit, be sure to say howdy.

gnug125 02-20-08 03:26 PM

Will do! I'll be riding a Kuota Kharma wearing a blue and black jersey (can't remember what it says).

I'll be there coming in from St. Louis. Gotta get some races in before Hillsboro-Roubaix!

You mean you're one of the lucky few who managed to get registered before the race filled up in under 24 hours?

I'll be at Froze Toes as will a few of my teammates. Manchester Racing Club/Trek St. Louis

Yeah i was lucky that i didn't have work or class that day otherwise i would have missed out on the race. One of my teamates sent out an email to let us all know. I would have been pissed if i would have missed that race because that's where i grew up at!

Scuttlebutt is that Rich Pierce opened up the registration (accidentally) 10 days too early.

I'm still gonna roll out to the race and just hope for some no-shows and talk to registration.

Would be there but have a broken wenis

I know in years past there has always been some no shows...good luck on getting a spot!

Well if any of y'all are still going and see a tall lanky dude in the Manchester Racing Club kit on a red LeMond, say "hi!"

(names Carl, but I'll respond to carlfreddy too ;) )

Well lets hear all about!

Typical Froze Toes action.

Right from the gun people were hammering pretty hard and a few of the juniors (its always the juniors, always) tried some attacks but nothing got any further than a football field down the road. After about 10 miles of this the diesel engines that were at the front driving the pace at 26-28mph just died and we rode the rest of the race as one giant rectangle and it was impossible to move up without breaking the yellow line rule.

Again, a couple riders from Mesa tried to break away but nothing stuck. We eventually caught the Masters race and at that point it was like everyone just gave up and started soft-pedaling. I coasted to the back of the pack and sat in. I knew the finish would be nasty, and it was. At the 200m mark it was as if everyone decided that they didn't care about the yellow line rule and took the whole road and instantly there was a huge pile-up. Bikes in the air, riders over the bars, people going agricultural. I was far enough back that I had time to avoid the carnage and pack finished.

Initially I felt disappointed with my result, but I accomplished what I set out to do; gauge my fitness against the peloton. Conclusion? I'm ready to start crushing souls. I wanted to do another lap, in fact I felt that another lap would've actually helped, maybe some of the breaks would've stuck. After I turned in my timing chip I went and rode another 10 miles just because my legs felt good.

My only regret is that I didn't attack when we were at our closest to the Masters race. I had enough gas in the tank, my legs felt great, and I think the ensuing mayhem as I worked my way through the masters race would've discouraged anyone from following.

I'd say it was a successful first race of the season. I just hope that everyone involved in the carnage is ok.

I have nothing to compare it to as this was my first road race but in my race both groups of 5's came togeather (despite a minute stagger at the start) to form a gigantic herd of sketchy dorks. I managed to avoid 3 big on-road pile ups to find myself in position to sprint for the finish. I aint gonna lie, I froze. It was all too much and I missed the jump. As it turned out, there was a gigantic pile up at 50 meters out and I was able to dive through to take 7th.

I too hope everyone is ok (LOTS of bodies on the ground today)

I will tell you right now that road racing is 10000 times scarier than mtb racing.

I cant wait for the next race!

what cat are you?

I was one of the people in the "gigantic pile up". I was in about 5th when the two guys right in front of me fell into one another and i had nowhere to go but over the handlebars. Unfortunatly when i was on the ground one of my teamates plowed into me and broke his collarbone. I came away with just alot of sore body parts and some road rash.

gnug125 02-26-08 08:43 AM

Ouch, Kcress. I was behind the first two pile ups and had to catch up both times. The second crash I actually had to dismount, which left me way behind. I got within 15 feet of the lead group but could not hold it on the last hill before Z. I ended up finishing 13th a minute and half behind the front. I was pretty happy with that when I saw the carnage at the finish line.

Don't hate on Juniors. Cat 3 (or 4) is a career step for them. As for you, you'll be "crushing souls" as a cat 4 for the rest of your life.

I beg your pardon?

Did I offend you somehow?
