GOOD NEWS!!! Perhaps the answer to my back/pain issue....

Well....at least I think I might be on to something here....

For those of you who haven't heard my incessant *****ing about my back (and my weight), I've heen having problem with my right hip/glute/lower back area for quite awhile now. Really hard efforts kill me from time to time....last year, it was a 50/50 shot. Tried stretches, strengthening.....it helped to some degree, but not completely.

So...fast forward to todays' enjoyable 2 hour spin on the trainer . Lately I've been noticing a lot of discomfort with my seat. This started around last summer actually....at first, I thought it was due to losing weight and my bony ass not being comfortable, but has been really difficult to get comfortable. I thought I was sitting on a nerve, it was getting so annoying.

After 2 hours, I get off the bike in pain, get naked, and start exploring my sitbones :D. Turns out I have a small lump like RIGHT where I would sit on my right sitbone. Awesome. Sooooooo.....I'm guessing this is probably the root, or at least a large part, of my issues. I do have the luxury of being genetically gifted with fatty tumors (thanks dad), so I'm thinking it's probably one of those things.

Guess a trip to the doctor is in order now, and obviously gonna have to get it removed, because it's annoying the **** out of me. Anyone else ever had this issue?

garysol1 02-20-08 07:04 PM

So is a WooHoo  in order or a Man that really sucks in order********** I am so confused but I do wish you lots of luck in getting it sorted out.

GuitarWizard 02-20-08 07:11 PM

Well....I dunno yet...probably both....but if it gets rid of the pain, I'll survive for a couple of months....

Going to call the Doc tomorrow.

Az B 02-20-08 09:40 PM

At least you have something to look forward to.

I think I have the same thing. It almost feels like a saddle sore, but it never gets any worse or better, and is definitely under the skin.

The good news for me is that riding on the Brooks doesn't irritate it at all, the bad news is I have 5 bikes and only one Brooks saddle. :)

Let us know what you find out.

Az

Have a Dr. appointment this afternoon....they got me in kinda quick.

irish pat 02-21-08 08:27 PM

that's great news, Guitarwizard. That could definitely be a suspect. I used always carry my wallet in my back pocket, when I sat it would cause very little discomfort but would force my sitbones off-level. I had back problems, so I now carry my wallet in a front pocket-also safer. I did a bunch of other stuff also for my back, that may have helped, but this was a big one.
Hopefully we'll see you at some races and you won't have any excuses about why you didn't win, haha.

GuitarWizard 02-21-08 09:31 PM

Negative on the lump...apparently I've just managed to irritate/inflame "stuff" down there in my sitbone area.

I am going to try a San Marco Concors Light seat, as the Toupe apparently isn't cutting it anymore.

Back to square one.

GuitarWizard 03-10-08 12:15 PM

Got second opinion.....lump needs to be removed. Awaiting appointment with surgeon :).

Score.

wfrogge 03-10-08 12:22 PM

Never seen somebody get exited about finding a lump on their body before.

GuitarWizard 03-10-08 12:35 PM

The prospect of being able to ride without pain is pretty damn exciting.

waterrockets 03-10-08 12:49 PM

Yeah, this is good news all around. Should help the riding immediately, and you're addressing a health risk and will hopefully be able to put this all behind you soon.

:D

Hope you this doesn't keep you off the saddle too long GW.

GuitarWizard 03-10-08 04:34 PM

I see a big rubber donut in my near future. Ugh.

After this, I think I will get another bike fitting done....going to try Sunrise Cyclery in NY this time. Then, see how the back/hip does after I'm all healed up. Then hopefully I'm good to go in flogging myself to a pulp on the bike. Leg pain good....back/hip pain bad :)

GuitarWizard 04-02-08 08:09 PM

Got the results of my MRI today - looks like a bunch of scar tissue in my sitbone areas....a very slight amount on my left side (not really noticeable), but the right side is obviously where it all is. Sooo......surgery is scheduled for next Friday. Oh, and as an added bonus, I'm not feeling well right now and haven't ridden since Sunday. Soooooo.....yeah, this season is shot....

botto 04-02-08 08:15 PM

what a pain in the ass.

at least you're taking care of business.

Well, at least the end is near.

I had an office mate who broke his coccyx somehow (slow fracture, over time). We had a lot of jokes with that one. We were both game programmers at the time, and he whipped up this really cool MRI viewer with DX8, and it totally killed the software that came with the data. Pretty funny.

GuitarWizard 04-02-08 08:40 PM

LOL

Yeah....well, since I want to make sure this heals up with no issues (and in turn, creating more scar tissue), I will probably be off the bike for around 6 weeks in talking to the surgeon.

Looks like I'll have to re-institute the starvation diet again, otherwise I'm sure I'll hit past 160 pounds.

ericcox 04-02-08 09:14 PM

Glad they diagnosed the problem, and it sounds like you are going to take recovery seriously. Better to screw the one season than have to do this again.

Best wishes, and I hope that in the end, all is well.

I had one in December....it's called "rough breakup". How do ya think I hit like 135 pounds (down from 141 pounds) without riding? So yeah...now I'm 20 pounds heavier (and apparently gaining) since then....

It was great....I had a few days of "damn, I forgot to eat today".

While I obviously won't do that, I will have to really cut back on what has lately been my "normal" food consumption. Which has been anything from a large pizza (in one sitting), to Chinese food, candy, a ****load of soda, 2 lunches at work, etc.

Yeah....I think over the last year I was so strict on some stuff, I kind of went nuts and have eaten everything in sight the last couple months. It's not working out so well.

botto 04-02-08 09:42 PM

less soda more beer (unless you're 12 stepping it).

Nah....believe it or not, I actually hate beer....which I guess is a good thing, given my penchant for over-indulging things that I particularly like. Like pizza, for example.

I have cut the soda out again. I had bought a new mini-fridge for the apt. and wanted to fill it with something, so I bought 2 cases of soda LOL. Went through that pretty quickly. Now I just pretend that the water I'm drinking tastes like Dr. Pepper or Sunkist.
