The downside to being a 50 year old slow guy trying to race with faster younger guys
Should require no further explanation. Right Cleavey?
And I have to read threads where guys 20 years younger than me complain about how it sucks to be super fit and fast. You pinheads. Just shut up and crush souls already.
Speaking of soul crushing, that Killer Penguin sure is missing in action. Is he racing in Europe for Liquigas or something? What did I miss?

Do I know you from a former life?
However, I'm with you regarding super fit guys in their 20s and 30s.
BTW, I do have these:
And they do go to 11 :
Ya gotta love Richard Branson.
EDIT: Aren't you posting way past your bed time?

We've got this 47 year old guy who just joined our team. He'd been riding a five-speed town bike on our 'fast rides' up until like three weeks ago. Showed up to a TT this weekend for the hell of it on his road bike.
Won.
Of course he was 12th at Milan San Remo and KoM 2nd at the '84 Giro behind Fignon.

Ned Overend finished 4th in the Mt. Washington Hillclimb @ age 51 two years ago. T. Hamilton was first, followed two minutes later by two 25-ish American pros. Deadly Nedly was 10 seconds off their wheels. He broke the 50+ record for the course by 20 minutes. In my opinion that's the hardest hillclimb on the planet.
What's your point about the old former pro who shows up and kicks your ass? He should be kicking your ass. I ain't N. Overend, I ain't no former pro UCI cyclist. I was always a bike racing friggin meatball. Now I'm an old bike racing meatball.
The British are almost as inscrutable as the Chinese. Treefox, you and BD should get together and Baffle the World.

Hey, not for nothing boys, it's not the climb that would scare me. It would be the Descent of Mt. Washington bicycle race. They could call it the Tour de Yikes.

OK, here's a downside:
At last Tuesday's race, the first of the year, I was feeling somewhat feisty. I went off the front several times with the last attempt during the next to last lap. I figured why not go for it. I hammered as hard as I could and this other guy who's an endurance-type guy yells out that he's on my wheel. I do the don't look back thing and pull for at least 400 meters. Then I flick my elbow and expect this guy to pull through. Instead it's one of these guys who probably won't turn 40 until December. I look at him and he says, "Nice pull." The whole pack is behind him.

I did the practice race last year. Boy did it suck. After we got above the tree line, the winds were gusting at over 40mph. On one switch back, the wind actually knocked me over (I had very little momentum.) Luckily they don't let you actually descend down on your bike...most of us were pretty out of it by the time we reached the top, but that could have been because the temp drops to about 35F and we only had about 5 feet of visibility...
As a point of reference, it's only about 8 miles or so. But if you can do it in 1hr 15min or less, you're one of the fast ones. Ned and company do in the 50min range... It took me almost twice that.

hello
It doesn't matter. At 53, I way cooler than most of these super fit 20-something racers when I'm on my fixed gear. I've been riding fixed since they were just learning how to ride bicycles.

That's the steepest portion. It only averages something like 11-12% overall.

There are ethical boundaries even Pcad will not cross. If I could only be more like my hero Governor Spitzer, who apparently knows no such bounds.
P.S. This thread was merely a satirical response to that dopey 'Downside of being a fit racer' thread. I guess the latter is like the 'Downside of being a rich hot blonde'. I can't see it.

What kills me, is I was looking at a flyer for a local weeknight series, and noted that the Cat 5's are in with the juniors. This isn't un-common, but strikes me as terribly stupid when there is no Master's 4/5. Adults with mortgage payments (half the 5's are over 30 these days) really don't want to race with the kiddies.
