Recording intervals on your PowerTap
Today I wanted my PT to record each 8-10 minute hill interval as a separate file. How do I tell the head unit of the PT SL to do that? I stopped at the top of the hill and let everything go to '0' (except my HR) but that didn't do it. I know this may in the little convoluted manual, but I figured I'd come to Road Nazi World Headquarters over here and ask first.

Well if you record them as intervals ( by holding mode to start the first one then press mode and select together to start each subsequent one) they will show up clearly within one file ( you can easily separate them). Why do you want them in different files?

I don't know if you can do this.
I can see why you'd want to though -- that way you can look at charts (power or hr dist, mean maximal power, etc.) for one effort rather than the entire ride.
I'm doing fine just starting new intervals. I only use this functionality during the ride though. I usually blow away the interval ranges in WKO, and drag out more accurate ranges by hand. On the bike, it's nice to browse back and see what the averages and times were for previous intervals.

To start a new interval hold both buttons down briefly (there is no concept of stopping an interval).
Although this will be one file, both WKO and PowerAgent show your intervals. Did you ever get WKO on your Mac, pcad? If you did not, then in PowerAgent, on the right hand side, you should see your intervals. Click on it and it will automatically zoom into that section of your data. If you do have WKO, the same concept is on the left side when viewing the ride data.

Won't the PT save them as separate files if I hold down both buttons and get 'CLR' after and before each interval??

WKO, I believe, is a shorthand of "Workout"

do you mean zero the torque? To zero the torque hit the mode button until it lines up with the wattage. then hold down the select button till the wattage number blinks than let go. The blinking number will tell you whether or not the torque is zeroed out. If it flashes anything but zero hold the select button down until it returns to zero. than hit select again and you are zeroed and ready to go

If you press and release both buttons (Do NOT hold them down and clear all your data!) then you will begin to record an interval. Do the same thing to mark the end of the interval. By doing this the work that follows "interval one" will be recorded as "interval two" even though you are just recovering between intervals. When you are ready to start your next interval, repeat and the interval will be recorded as "interval three."

Pcad, this thing is obviously too complicated for you. Please send me the Powertap hub and the attached Zipp for an exchange to something more up to your level of qualification.

Thanks for the info by the way 92.
Good grief this **** is too complicated. But oddly fascinating in an annoying sort of way to a guy who always owned VCRs that blinked '12:00'. I have figured out how to work the Tivo however. I have to say this Power Tap gizmo friggin ROCKS. I'm also not quite as wimpy as I thought; I'm sure my average wattage during these approx. 10 min. hillclimb intervals had to be 300+ watts. But I would like to KNOW what it was.

So I press and release both buttons for about a second or so... do NOT wait until CLR appears? That works for what I'm looking to do? Is that right? Is there any indication on the PT that I've cleared it for a new data session, or I just take it on faith? Do they mention this in the manual at all?
Thanks for the info by the way 92.

Yeah, I don't do what merckx89 is suggesting (switch to interval mode entirely). Just push and release both buttons and you should see "Int 1" on the left side of the display. Every time you push both buttons the display should advance to "Int 2" and so on. At home in PowerAgent (which I think is what you use?) then you will be able to select whichever interval you wish to review from the menu. I think it's cumbersome, so I don't really bother with it anymore. I'd rather just look at the file and isolate the interval manually in PowerAgent or CyclingPeaks.

It's more accurate to go into the file after the ride and clear out the intervals, then drag over them and create new intervals (in PowerAgent or WKO+). This way you're not including the 1/2 pedal strokes at the front and back of the interval when you didn't have a hand on a hood.
Your 10-minute hill repeats should be very easy to identify in your power file without intervals on the head unit. Drag over them, save the interval in PowerAgent, and you're done.
It would be nice though, if you could put a "file break" in a ride file during a ride though. That way you could look at race charts without warmup and cooldown data in there (I'm not talking about the main graph view, but the distributions and such).

Pcad - listen to HerrDoctor.
I exclusively use the second method - hold down the mode button until the '1' comes up, indicating the number of the interval. Then hit both buttons together each end/beginning of an interval.

You can't get it to break intervals out into separate files, so in that sense, no it doesn't do what you want. It sounds like that may not actually be what you want, because it will, however, create zones in your ride file for your intervals. PowerAgent will display these for you, and you can browse the numbers for just the intervals if you like. These are where you hit both buttons just for a click, as described above, to mark the next interval (once at the start, once at the end).
It's more accurate to go into the file after the ride and clear out the intervals, then drag over them and create new intervals (in PowerAgent or WKO+). This way you're not including the 1/2 pedal strokes at the front and back of the interval when you didn't have a hand on a hood.

I love interval mode...
For most intervals, I set the PT to display avg wattage. This way I can see if I'm going to make my target wattage for the interval, and make adjustments if I'm too high or too low.
Interval mode is also very useful for keeping me from overtraining. Once my avg wattage for an interval dips by say, 15% from when I started, I forget about doing another one and shoot for additional reps next time.

To mark off the warmup and cooldown I just mark an interval, then go back in WKO+ and edit the names and times of the intervals if I was off a bit.
What do you set your PT to display during a race when you really don't want to know how much you're hurting?
