Collegiate Upgrading Question

Okay so this is my first year racing and most of the races i have done were collegiate races, although i did two Cat5 road races.

So after doing four collegiate races and consistently placing in the top three i got upgraded to a B, and according to the USAC website a B race should be equivalent to a Cat3/4 race, although i did not get my Cat4 upgrade when i got upgraded to B's. So far i have done four collegiate B's races and got first and second place in two of them.

So my question is do my points that i have won in the collegiate B's races that i have got so far still count for my A/Cat3 upgrade even though i was a Cat5 during those races?

I'm pretty sure that they do not. Until you have reached cat X, you cannot score points for cat X+1, even if you are handing cat X+1 its proverbial ass.

But that's bull****. Whether im a cat5 or cat4 does not change the difficulty of the race and so if i win a B race as a cat5 i should get points.

if i'm counting right, you've done 10 races. You are a 4 now by default as soon as you show them 10. If you follow proper procedure to a t, this is the "right" way to handle this.

now what I would do is submit a resume for upgrade and only include the 2 cat 5 rr results and the 4 collegiate C rr results. When I was a 5 I didn't place outside the top 5 so they moved me up after 6 races per my request.

You are obviously strong enough to handle racing as a B, so get to the 3s ASAP so you can upgrade to A and earn points towards being a 2. Racing B's you can only earn points to go from 4-3 not 3-2.

If you do it that way, you should be able to use the points from the b's races to upgrade from 4-3. Make sure to keep a spreadsheet of your race results including distance and field size. Then check here for your upgrade points.

Submit another upgrade request the next week if you have 20 or more points.

This sounds like great advice except that i already got upgraded to Cat4 last night and i submitted all of my races. I tried upgrading to Cat4 a while back with my C's results and after getting 1st and 2nd at two Cat5 races but that apparently wasnt good enough for them.

What if i submit an upgrade but dont mention that i was a cat5 while racing B's? Maybe they will jus assume i was already a cat4 and my points will be good?

when you submit your next upgrade, only include the races that got you upgrade points from 4-3.

What conference are you in and how many 4-3 points do you have?

an A upgrade = automatic upgrade to 3's around here. B I would assume means an auto upgrade to 4's. So you should be a 4 already.

Correct, I should have been given my 4 upgrade along with my B upgrade, but it seems there are two different people in charge of granting upgrades for collegiate and for usac races, and the two had differing opinions of whether i should have been upgraded and thats why its so confusing now......

It's in the rulebook, there should be no confusion. Find out where it is in the book and point it out to them when you put in for the upgrade again. Followed by a "bitÁh Please!"

you aren't doing the Martinez crit are you? (Santa cruz I'm hoping). I don't want to see you in any 4 field I'm a part of. Good luck on the upgrade, you handed some of our B's their *****es at UCSC and at least one is talking about an 3 upgrade in the near future.

This year one of my teammates, who had raced B's in previous years but never really got any good results there, wrote in to the conference director and got an automatic upgrade to Cat 3. I'm not sure how that worked, because I raced B's last year and got some good placings, but I still had to earn the rest of the upgrade points in USCF races. I think that is how they are doing it this year. My teammate is not really strong enough to race A's so he's still doing B's. YOu could probably just get upgraded to 3 already, I think.
