Category V Upgrade

I don't remember reading anywhere on the USACycling website in regard to being forced to upgrade after completing 10 races. I was talking with another member of my team about upgrading to Cat IV as soon as he completes 10 races. I was thinking of staying Cat V until I have a top five finish. I don't see the point of upgrading if you're not finishing in the top 10 of a Cat V race.

Question is.... Will I be forced to upgrade after completing a certain number of Cat V races?

you are not required to upgrade from 5-->4 after 10 starts, but why would you not want to?

I don't think they will ever force you to upgrade from Cat V. Maybe if you are lapping the field and someone keeps noticing. I know lots of people planning on doing a whole season as a Cat V until they are comfortable upgrading.

Figured it'll be best to upgrade once my skills and endurance improves. I don't want to upgrade just so I can tell everyone that I'm a Cat IV yet being dropped during races.

Nope, there's no enforcement to go from V -> IV.
But staying in Crash-5 is a bit dangerous overall (imho).

As a Cat V who gets dropped in every race now, I can't wait to upgrade to Cat 4... and get dropped in every race. And don't forget Masters races .....

Knock on wood. I haven't been dropped in a race.. My wife and kid are coming out this weekend to see me race for the first time. I'll just flip if I'm dropped in this race.

the 4's aren't much - if at all - faster than 5's. there are just more of them to crash when someone screws up. and someone will screw up. in last night's race, there was a crash on the outside of a turn, and some yahoo on the inside of the turn tensed up and started wobbling back and forth all by himself. it would have been funny to see if i hadn't been right next to him at the time.

anyway, cat 5 isn't aout results. it's about experience. basically, if you've been riding around in the 5's for 10 races and haven't crashed or caused a crash, then you are ready for the 4's.

Were you in that race last night. The crash happened right next to me but I didn't even bother looking.. The sound of the crash was enough for me.

maybe. i was in the 4/5. it happened just as the sprint was about to go off, and everyone slowed down just as i was getting out of the saddle. the guy who bobbled next to me, moved over into me, then my knee hit the forearm of the la grange guy on the other side of me. last night's group was painfully slow, and very difficult to move around in. i seriously need some teammates!

that's two weeks in a row that there has been a nasty sounding wreck right before the finish. people take these "practice" races way, way too seriously.

yea the 4's aren't really that much faster, just a bigger group and maybe a little safer...maybe. No reason not to really.

The 5s races fill up faster. The 4s have bigger field limits, and although there are still crashes and plenty of unsafe riders, the really bad riders that never should have been racing have been weeded out for you.

I sucked as a 5. To me it seemed less than a race. I don't know why. When I upgraded things seemed better, smotther, funner. But most importantly, there was a need to improve. I became a better cyclist. My training became more involved. I had team mates to work with.

Also you can start on points for 3's. If you win as a 5 it means nothing essentially.

I have the misfortune of racing in a series that group 4s and 5s together. My plan is to win in the 5s as soon as possible and request an upgrade to the 4s. My only light at the end of the tunnel is to upgrade to 3 if I want to avoid racing with 5s (it should be noted at this point that I am currently that sketchy 5 guy you don't want next to you on a high speed crit turn. I do plan on changing this however)

What about Podium Girls?

Another downside about being a 5 for long is that I'll be all by myself once my other teammate in 5 upgrades. Always nice to see another teammate in a race.

They gave me my prizes for winning on Sunday, and it was all in this fancy sports bag. Inside, there was a check, for $230!!!

I was so happy. I would have sprinted harder if I knew I was looking at that kind of money. As I headed back to the car, the promoter chased me down and said he gave me the wrong bag. He gave me one that instead had a $45 check.

That was a bit of a letdown. Winning made up for it. Obviously we don't do it for the money, but when someone gives it to you, then takes it away...

One note on getting points in the 5s: a lot of races are 4/5 races. If you hold an annual license as a 5, any points you get against Cat 4s will apply toward your Cat 3 upgrade once you upgrade to Cat 4.

Man, that blows. I mean, the winning was the most important. But, c'mon. It's like getting to heaven only to find out you have to sneak in the back door and they send Gabriel to hunt you down to, uh ... I don't know where I was going with this.

The single best reason to upgrade out of cat 5 is that you won't be stuck looking for races if you forget to register a year before the events happen. I hate 50 rider limits and wait lists.

Plus, the quicker you get to cat 3, the faster you can slap a ``o-meter'' in your signature and start sandbagging like all these other donkeys here on the forums who have already accumulated 1,000 points in two races, but still haven't upgraded. 8)

The 4's are not much safer and the fields are much larger. As for the races not filling up... the first 3 races of the season around here have filled up rather quickly. Nothing like racing on half a road with 90 of your closest friends. Thankfully half the field get's dropped.

It's nice to finish in the top 10 a few times before upgrading so you have some confidence going into the 4's but I'd upgrade after 10 races if I were you.
