Tour of the Gila....

Anyone ever done it? I have an opportunity to go, and really really really really want to, but I'm curious what it's like.

Probably makes Ft. Davis its little beech.

I've driven around that area and it's nothing like we have in Texas. Is it before or after Nationals? I've been pushing some of our riders to hit Ft. Davis or Gila to prepare for Colorado. That school thing tends to get in the way though.

Weekend before Collegiate nats, which I can't go to anyways because of finals (and I wouldn't make our team in all likelihood).

if you have the chance, do it. why wouldnt you?

I've never, but would love to some day. from what I understand based on web forums and talking to folks who've done it, it's a mountainous stage race, very selective to climbers, and requires some descending skills.

a teammate of mine placed top five in the masters division last year. its a hard race. lots of climbing and high temps.

not a race to take lightly. if you've other plans around that time, like your collegate race... you may want to plan specifically for it next year as it may very well ruin any taper you've going on.

sleazy 04-04-08 08:21 AM

sorry- just reread your post. you cant do collegiate nationals...

so yeah, if youre in shape and want a hard effort... go for it.

VosBike 04-04-08 08:48 AM

I think I'm going this year. Gonna ride it not so hard before nats, if that's possible.

I hear amazing things from anyone I've ever talked to who has done this race. It is certainly a climber's race, but it should be very well organized and tons of fun.

Now staying in Silver City...not exactly what I would call fun. You like camping? cause you prob should.

my aunt wants me to do this race. too bad i suck and am a shoddy cat5. shes lives in silver city, and says the race is a blast to watch each year. thats about all i can offer

I got the go-ahead from the coach :D If the boss lets me off the hook, I'm there!

dave99ag 04-04-08 11:24 AM

Should be a great trip!

I ride with a former winner from the early 90s and she says it's a great race.

I am assuming you mean Wenger. You had better kick ass if you drive a million miles away for that race. You could never catch my ****** intentionally putting myself through those climbs.
