F. Rainy. Crits.

In 2006 I had a serious ER visit on a backboard after getting a facefull of curb in a rainy crit. Did I learn my lesson? Nope.

Today I narrowly avoided two crashes, only to get caught up in a third. I tried to come inside of guys sliding out, and slid out myself. I've got deep, deep road rash on my hip, knee, calf, ankle and forearm. I got up, took my free lap, and caught back on, but the pain was creeping up on me quickly - and bottom line, I'd lost the initiative. I was scared to take any risks, and getting dizzy from bleeding all over my Sidis. DNF.

No more freaking rainy crits. I can't afford to get hurt badly enough to put off my upcoming knee surgery. Also: nausea from pain rocks.

The only upside is you slide more easily when it's wet...

bike racing

what a crazy thing we do

Im glad you are ok

I think the worst part is not the pain but rather not being able to finish the race. The pain goes away but that stupid nagging feeling of how the race might of went lingers longer for me.

Sorry about your crash. Do the right things to heal quickly. Stay on the bike.

Rain isn't always bad. There are situations in which it will actually improve traction.

Light rain brings up all the oils that are on the road. Not good. A heavy rain will wash the oils away and leave a clean road surface.

Paint, manhole covers or sewer grates are always bad when wet. Some surfaces, even when clean, are slick when it rains. But sometimes clean, wet pavement, with the right tires, can offer decent adhesion. Experience will show you which is which.

Thanks guys

Id:
It's easier to slide...but not so much at 34.2mph (thanks cyclingpeaks!)

Bantam:
That'd be the one. I'm still hanging out in the parking lot, as there's free wifi in the city (very cool!) and I've got homework that I'm knocking out for one of my online courses.

I wonder how popular I'll be in the RR tomorrow with my arse hanging out of my shorts?

Bob:
I think I caught the paint. In general rain isn't too horrible with Pro2Races.

No pics - for the record I wasn't the one who posted those in the first place...

q:
The bike is alright, I JUST put Chorus shifters on it literally last night, and they're a little scuffed, but seem to be okay. At the last minute I decided not to run the Zipps, so at least I saved myself a possible 1500 dollar crash. The RR is on. I need revenge.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your crash.

Just in case you haven't read it before, I don't race in the rain (anymore). Bicycle racing can be like Russian Roulette. Racing criteriums in the rain can be like putting another bullet in the chamber.

Did you make it to the Road Race? I found it to be a miserable affair. 5s race realizes a 50% OTB attrition rate inside the first ten miles, myself included. Roll over the line in 19th after 35 very lonely miles. I'm really sucking it up compared to how I finished last season.

Our Tuesday nighters are held on a track that takes in part of a 1/4 mile drag strip. If it even starts to mist, they stop the race because that 1/4 mile turns into a skating rink. I hate riding in the rain, so I love racing there.

Hope you heal up quickly, Snuff.

We had an annual race like that in Denver, at Bandimere Speedway. The crashes near the start line were horrifying, because that tacky rubber surface would grab off a bunch of skin, then set the rider spinning for the 2nd bounce.

That was the race with the Potato Head prime though. Those Mr. Potato Head laps were raced harder than the finish.

A mummy that looked ready to lay a smack down, no less. Sorry about all the trouble. At least you showed up with legs. I left mine at home in bed.

Nice to meet you by the way.
