race report: I "ribbon"ed

Did a road race today (cat 5). It was relatively relaxed with only moderate surges (as opposed to the usual ape-@#$% we do since our races are short). At a decent hill midway through, I made the selection of 7 up front. We were joined by a few more on the long flat drag back to the line. There was 1 team with about 5 people in the front group (everyone else myself included was without teammates). They kept attacking, we kept covering. Finally one of the non-team members attacks and they sit up and let him go. Some poorly organized chasing led to this guy solo-ing for 1st with a bunch sprint for 2nd. I had done a lot of work covering breaks and trying to bridge. The sprint started earlier than expected (600m out) and I had terrible positioning. Ended up 10th. I won a ribbon.

Lessons: Be ready to jump at any time within 1K. Attack more, cover attacks less. Ride with teammates.
