First Race Report

My first race ever: Mississinewa Reservoir Road Race, citizens, 30 miles—28 really.

I sat in the first lap, then “attacked” once, went with another “attack”, became lightly toasted with 500m left, sat up at 50m burnt to a crisp and cruised in for 8th or 9th//19.

Loved it. Doing it again tomorrow but with a much bigger field (~50) and many more turns.

After the race I spoke with the winner (nice guy, Mike, forgot the team) and he thought I’d be one to look for in the sprint and that I was one of the stronger racers in the group. (I’d stayed in toward the front the whole race never more than 10 back.) Paying compliments to people is a great gift to them. Man that felt good, especially after the last 1k.

What got me was a tactical mistake. The race flier said 30 miles, the course profile says 15 miles, 2 loops. I was looking at my distance and pushed the pace from the front with what I thought was 3 miles to go. After a min or so, I sat up, got back in line ~8th wheel, we turned a corner (already?) and LO! The Dam!!! (the final sprint was on the Reservoir dam road (pretty cool, actually). I freeked out. HR jumped a few beats. I was barely starting to recover when we turned it on.

For a brief moment with 1k to go, I was in a perfect position. 5th wheel back, feeling pretty damn tough (this is it!). I looked up and 2-3 riders began to surge from the back. The finish area was totally closed so we could utilize both lanes—I was behind a dude then next to a dude and before I knew what was happening I was boxed in on the inside lane with only the gutter to my right (pretty clean, and safe actually), so I went for it just off the gutter and wind. With 500m to go I was starting to fade, legs got heavy, so I pushed as hard as I could and was a crispy piece of toast by ~50m.

I was done and lost it.

I have not shaved my legs yet. I may next week. ‘Cause now I’m a futhermuckin bicycle racer.

Now I’ve got to start doing those WRI and more 20 min int. for toughness. That I need a bit more of.

Good job. You should gain at least one position after you shave.
