He even took a beer from that devil dude in the red:

And he finished the race ahead of at least a dozen cat4's who DNF'd.

To be fair to us in the group behind, I'm fairly certain we did catch up, but I'm not sure. It would've been possible to keep a lead. The leaders were reluctant to pick to up in the wind so that pack was slooow. I hope he races again at opus, that's awesome. He's got to break nearly every bikeforums rule though.

Noticed that too! Maybe he like to feel like he's going downhill?

Judging from that huys legs, I'd say he was just looking to dick around. Finishing a Cat4 race isn't that big of a deal for the guy who obviously raced 5s at some point.

This shows me just how "too serious" I take myself sometimes. I need to lighten up and enjoy racing and most importantly "life."

a specialized bottle on a trek frame - how tacky.

Good for him though for going out and racing. Every fannypack fred like that dude loathes the racer types, but only expresses such loathing over on the road biking forum, where claims of dropping racers are voluminous. At least this dude went out and tried (maybe succeeded) in backing up such a claim.

LOL I know a few of guys that raced in the 5's at Opus. I will have to ask them about that guy.

I wasn't able to race Opus this week. I'll be racing at the Durand RR on Saturday. Hopefully our 60 degree heat wave holds on.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I think the ridicule of this fellow is unfortunate. Good for him for getting out there and trying it out. I hope someone offered him some encouragement...maybe even an invitation to join some group rides if he wants to improve.

Others goals are likely different from our own...this seems more accepted in other "competitions" like running races or triathlons, in which the majority of people are interested in the challenge of simply completing the event as opposed to winning. I recognize that cycling offers other venues for that (centuries, half-centuries etc), but I still say good on the guy for trying.

Some of this might also be preparatory for my own first mass start bike race coming up in 10 days....

I optimistically hope to do better than this guy, but would hope not to be ridiculed if I were dropped early.

Who's ridiculing? It seems to me the overwhelming majority are admirable of his effort.

Good for him, although I must ask why he thought he needed a fanny pack in a crit since he could've just strapped his stuff to his rack.

Not a road race, but I did a tri a couple of years ago in which I passed a guy on an ancient Trek mtb, with a rack, on which was affixed a blinkie. Which he had taken the time to turn on.

Safety first!
