The diff. between getting shelled @ Nyack and getting shot down in Viet Nam

I've had a few PM's over the past few months regarding the Nyack Ride. A common question is:

'If I get dropped will there be anybody who will ride back to Nyack with me?'

Anyone familiar with your typical testosterone bike racer pick up group ride can see the humor in this question. In the future I will tell them that they should think of getting shelled on the Nyack Ride like getting shot down over North Vietnam. The differences:

• It's more suburban

• You'll have much more lactic acid in your legs than an American pilot

• The Hilton you wind up at will be in Woodcliff Lake, not Hanoi (ours is much nicer)

• You won't get to see Jane Fonda in person on an AA gun, just on video in your room

That is all.

Somehow I think this is poor taste. My father flew in Vietnam (B-52, B-57, & OV-10A) and the fear of him being shotdown was prevalent. Many of his friends were POWs in Hanoi. Comparing this to a bike ride in Nyack is pathetic.

That said, I have never lived in Jersey.

I thought that was the point: it's just a bike ride!

Still, I can see why some might not be comfortable with the contrast being made even in jest.

Friend, the reason people in NYC are depressed is the light at the end of the tunnel ...... is Newark.

The fear of your car dying in Newark is prevalent too.

Not quite as pathetic as your notion that this was a serious comparison of course, but point taken.

I wouldnt call it "get" to see Jane Fonda.
After visiting POWs, she announced that the US captives were war criminals, but were well treated.
She lied to benefit Communist North Vietnam.

Not a Fonda fan here

P-cad, you can always be counted on to deliver. And I mean that in a most unsarcastic way. Thank you for the entertainment, my guru of self-loathing.

I did a crit in downtown Paterson.

It was a nice race, well organized, around a church and some mini-park/campus IIRC.

I rode out there with some friends in NYC. Needless to say, apart from the crit course, it was not the Paterson of William Carlos Williams eponymous poem. Pretty sure I placed in the money that day...

Nyack is for wussy. Come across to the east side and do Gimbels. There is no one to ride back with you when you get dropped. You will be stuck in North bumble****.

My father was in nam too. I had coworkers that served as well - one asked to go back and serve another term. I commend them to the highest. They are brave men.

But come on people, quit being a bunch of pu**ies. Is there anything that we can do or say without the cry-baby PC crowd chiming in? There's nothing I hate more than someone telling me (or anyone) how to speak and not offend.

"I'm offended"
That's offending"

Blah blah blah. Go crawl in a cave and stay there.

I'm offended at your use of the word cave, what about all the people living in caverns? So insensitive.

Wussy? Like the recent winner of a recent 1-2 race in Central Park, a recent CP vets race (my team mate Gary, more than 1), two of the top 3 or 4 TT guys in NJ, etc.? Those guys?

They're fast enough for Pcad. But thanks for asking.

By the way, I can't take issue with being called a Wussy. I can cop to that. Besides, who says there's anyone to ride back with you when you get shelled at Nyack? It's just you and your Self Loathing. But when I get shelled, that's all I need.

P.S. The next time Roger Aspholm shows up, I'm going to tell him Pablo says he's doing a Wussy Ride. Just hope he doesn't come up to Yonkers to drop the Flying friggin Finn Hammer on your Road Nazi heads. The thing I wonder with Roger is who's going to show him the route when he's off the front of your stupid Gimbels Ride?
