dismal race slate in NC - why?

I was looking at the racing sched for NC and it seems like there are a lot less races in May and June than there were last year - no Dragon's Challenge RR, no Cape Fear, etc. What's up with that anyway?

Dragon's Challenge got the kibosh from the powers that be on Fort Bragg - lots of troops are back on post and apparently they were concerned with the amount of military traffic and the race interfering with training. Or some such nonsense

Of course, this came to light after it was too late to permit a race out in the county somewhere, so C4 is just running the crit this year. It's too bad, I like that RR - I've put a good 5-10,000 miles on the 13 mile loop in the last few years...

Cape Fear (my club's race) is out this year. Frankly the club is burnt out from our past years' schedules and taking a year hiatus. For the past years we've done the NRC event, the crit, the Cape Fear RR, 4th of July Ride, and the Angel's ride (now the Brain Injury Association of NC ride). Some of the other guys wanted to take a break and let some of the other clubs in the area pick up the slack (i.e. SIMPLE GREEN) and others who either (i) don't put on a race or (ii) do that piggyback crap where there are 2, 3, or 4 clubs "putting on" the race.

Besides the Wake Speedway Training races in '07 and the now defunct Meadowmont Crit...I have no idea what the other clubs do to put on a race.

edit: speaking about the triangle centered clubs for the most part.

Both Dragon's Challenge and Cape Fear were great road races last year. I have great memories of both

Well, since those races are DEAD, what other option do I have?

yeah, what's the story w/ that? the website says that it's b/c the race course had a bunch of speedbumps put in. is there a story there?

when i raced meadowmont a couple of years ago, i remember there being one or two community members who resented the inconvenience of hosting a bike race once per year. i'm curious if the speedbumps were their underhanded way for axing the race? i mean, the hills of meadowmont were speedbumps enough!

too bad it's gone. that was a heck of a race.

June is always lax on races, its hot and people want a break. July though is crammed with races.

There are some recently installed speed bumps on the stretch after the start. I heard it made it unraceable.

The clubs in the Triangle are freakin' lazy.

I moved from the Triangle to the Cincinnati area two years ago. Totally different world. Most clubs here put on at least two per year. Even my tiny club (12 guys total, 2 out of the area right now) puts on an urban twilight crit with barriers and lights as well as a cross race that we're hoping to get UCI certified next year. One club ran four races last year.

Ironically, the Triangle has more racers ... but they do jack all.

Yeah while I don't like it either, I can't really complain about the racing in NC/SC... I nor any team/club I have been on(3 in just 1.5 seasons whoo hoo!) have done anything to promote racing other than volunteer bodies to help put up barriers for the NRC crit in downtown August (formerly Bank of America Crit, now Presbyterian).

Hey, let's not lump everybody together. Triangle Velo, which is a new team with all of seven people, has already put on three races this year. I would love to see more racing on the calendar, as I agree that this year looks somewhat sparse- but there are some clubs (not just mine!) doing everything they can to put races on.

Those of you who are asking about Meadowmont, how come you didn't come to Sanford yesterday for the Downtown Sanford Crit we put on? It didn't have a hill to equal Meadowmont's steepness, but it was a good course with a long rise on the frontstretch and made for some very good racing.

Triangle Velo will be there with probably four of our guys for the 2/3 race. Tried to get invites into the P/1/invite 2 field, but apparently it's full- bummer.
