New England Report: Blue Hills Classic

Milton, MA
Cat 's4
40-45 degrees and raining wet cats. very wet.
28 miles, 4 loops with 1 2:30 climb to the finish.
70 or so starters
(it figures; the day after our new Kits arrive, I'm wearing a gillet and winter tights!)

OK:

I was hoping for a break to establish today, but no such luck, although a few were tried. Everyone rode pretty smoothly over the easy course and I didn't hear any crashes. Nice.

After 21 wet miles and 3 laps completed, it was clear that the final climb would be the battleground for the winners of the race to make their money.
I was feeling fresh, like I finally got the legs open. Good.
I had a little climber marked for the last climb (he'd looked strong on the previous two climbs) and knew I'd be on his wheel till the sprint. Good.
A team of 4 Cambridge Bicycle Racing Team guys lined up and I grabbed the wheel of fellow tallman and all aroung nice guy Michael K. as we neared the mile-to-go mark.
Sitting 5th wheel of the CB team as they began to ramp up to the climb and I was feeling good.
The climb was fast fast and furious (my 50t ring and 11-26 cassette was superb here!) and I passed the CB guys. The front 10 riders were tightly packed making it hard to move. I was on the outside, just barely picking my way through the crowd as a gap closed behind me.
Speed staying high, legs good, almost there... thinking about getting in the drops for the sprint... rider attacks right! too early! I think as I keep marking small climber dude pedaling pmoothly.
early breaker stays close, no worries.
Last rise before finish, getting ready to sprint. Whhipp! Ben flies by on the left (good buddy and a hell of a sprinter), apparently he'd been marking me. smart man. I raise out of the saddle and open the throttle..woooosshhh.. great feeling.... waithing all race for this. Little climber dude is toast, and I'm looking ahead at 2 riders: Ben and "Early Attacker" with 100m to go. Keep pumping, ****!! need to shift. sit. shift. speed lost.
MASH MASH MASH. DONE. Line washed away by the rain was crossed. I take 3rd. Nice. Ben killed it for an easy 1st. Big ups, Ben! (good race for me, but I knew if I hadn't needed to shift I'd have taken 2nd.. I wasn't getting Ben today).

putting in for my upgrade after next weekend. ready for the 3s.

thanks for reading and Hello to Ken!!

other reports please!!!

Congrats Leo. Glad to hear you're rocking the upgrade so soon. Btw, just wanted to let you know that a few guys on our team mentioned your name when talking about Palmer - they were talking about your sportsmanship and how you are a classy rider. Keep it up, hombre.

Congrats on your finish! I love reading your reports- especially of the races that I was in, too- you can say "I remember that!"

My race didn't go nearly as well, but could've been worse, considering the conditions. I felt like I could move around the pack easily with the wide roads, and on the 2nd lap I was towards the front. I felt like the pack was acting really strange today. I'd get to the front, do some tempo, nothing too hard, look back to see a gap. I'd sit up, but it seemed like everyone else slowed down too. Maybe it was the weather. Oh well, maybe I'll be in some pictures. Sitting up.

I did try to go on the hill on the third lap with a young guy, probably a junior. So did not happen.

I saw CB, refunds now, and another team setup for the final time up the hill, but again, it was kind of bizarre. I assumed people would go all out, but with a strong tailwind the hill wasn't really much of a factor. Instead there were individual attacks like there would be on the flats- I had some terrible position in the middle of the pack and finished there.

Lessons? Don't assume you know what is going to happen in a bike race. If the last time up the hill did detonate the pack, I was confident that I'd have good position for the sprint (which I'd lose, but thats another, separate weakness- I'm a small climber-guy) Need to make sure I'm towards the front for the last lap.

Anyways, good racing this morning and go us for avoiding any pile-ups in that turn under 4 inches of water!

Good job Leo. We'll miss you in the 4's, but you deserve to ride with stronger and steadier guys.

My race wasn't great. Around the 3rd lap, I got very cold and stated to shiver. I was glad when the final climb came. I just sat up and phoned the rest in.

Great job and congrats on the upgrade. The 3s are much more fun than 4s.

BTW - why did you have to sit down to shift? Are you rockin it old school with down tube shifters?
