First race of the year.

I get to the line up BARELY on time, after I took what I thought was a quick lap to see the course.

So I am there, albeit late, but still before the start.

Whistle goes off, we go. Someone immediately hammers away, and initially I think I will go and get him, but he was in a full hard sprint and once I hit 30 mph, I backed off, and look behind me for the rest of the "peloton" (only 12 guys signed up for the cat 5 race.)

The peloton, was WAY back. So I slowed down, and they caught up but nobody passed me. I slowed down, everyone else slowed down. I sped up, they sped up.

Almost one lap down, and I am breaking some serious wind for everyone else. Finally, I get on my hoods, and really pedal slow.

One guy FINALLY goes around me out of the saddle, but his knee nails my bars and while I didn't fall, I turned hard into him to keep from falling and ended up bouncing off of him.

Next thing I know, the rest of the peloton is in full sprint mode. I jump on the pedals, try to keep up, but I get further and further back.

I was in the on the sprint with the guys fighting for 5th 6th and 7th, but I had already been lapped and I still got burned on the sprint

I knew I wasn't in tip top shape, but holy crap! These 5's were strong. Winning time was 25:08 on 2.3 mile course for 5 laps.

most of them are not strong...trust me. i was always one of the weakest riders in any field but usually managed to finish with the lead group (winning i could never do!). sounds like you just burned yourself out towing people around. let some other sucker do that next time

I've always wondered how I'd get back into the group if I was at the front for a little bit...

Flicking around the left would be the only thing I could think of and that would put you at the very end unless there was a gap or you could steal wheel.

Cliche, I am going to unveil my patented technique for Finishing In The Points, Criterium Subsection. It goes like this: hide in pack. On the first prime lap, move up, sprint for prime, grab points. Now, here's the important part: sit up. Put your hands on the tops. Keep those arms straight. Soft pedal, or maybe don't pedal at all. Especially you hit a windy back stretch, this will ensure that you go backwards like a Yugo on Mt. Washington. When you are inevitably swallowed by the pack, give it some gas to get back up to speed, and suck wheels until the bell lap. Don't go for the other primes - those things are fools' gold! On the bell lap, grab a position at the front and hang on for dear life until the sprint. If you can sprint, great! You might even win. If not, you can shoot for a top ten. Maybe even a top five! Those are my favorites. Good luck! But don't tell nobody.

You may be on to something there. I did basically that for my best crit finish. But I got boxed in on the second-to-last corner of the final lap and missed the jump or I would have finished much better. I was pretty happy with 14th of 60+ and a 36mph finish.
