pro teams and bikes
Does anyone know how a pro team decides on what line of bike (manufacturer) they are going to have for the team? Does the team go out and start asking manufactures or do the manufactures come to the teams with an offer? There seems to be a lot of teams on Specialized and Colnago's but only one team on Cervelo.

this is a loaded question. SEVERAL factors at play--
Yes, both teams and manufactures solicit one another. then it comes down to bidding. A few years ago, Liquigas was in negotiations with C-BALL and Specialized. C-Ball went crazy and paid WAY more than they needed to to get a pro-tour team. Specialized wanted q-step anyway.
so manufactures not only supply equipment...but $$$
that is why you don't see Cervelos...they don't have the $ behind them that the others do. Trust me, teams WANT Cervelos, they just don't have the resources as far as staff, manufacturing, and just plain ol' cash to support multiple pro-tour teams.

Money, exisiting relationships (example - Saronni's teams rode Colnago because of his relationship with Ernesto). nationality (Italian team on a French made frame - no way!), how much weight a team has (Rabobank are always going to bet a better deal off Colnago than a small continental tour Belgian team).

at the begining of the year, all of the bike teams get together and all of the bike manufacturers get together. each manufacturer says how many teams it will sponser. then, the teams are each given marbles. the worst team gets the most marbles, and the best team only gets one marble. all of the marbles are placed into a giant ball and mixed. a single marble is drawn from the ball, and whichever team is on there gets to pick what manufacturer it wants. then, all of that teams marbles are removed from the ball, and another marble is chosen. that team gets to pick second. therefore, there is a greater chance for the worse teams to get the better equipment so things are fair.

you're right...i wasn't clear enough in my statement..."that is why you only see ONE pro-tour team on Cervelos." as far as the women's team...small potatoes compared to the millions it takes for a men's pro-tour team.
yes c-ball= cannonballs= cannonwhales=cannondales (old school) I forget most of you are LA era cyclists.
